..... N g" ll. N ..... en ~ w z W ...J (J >(J CMC Saddle~ack----- ......._ - - - - - by John Bethea/Creative Images IRVINE, CAL., Nov. 5, 1972 - It was one of those "let's relax"_ type of days for the CMC as a few opted not to attend the Carlsbad Trans-AMA and wound up entering the Saddleback gates. _ But the guys on the track weren't about to relax and some pretty wild races took place ... like the first one between Dave Boydstun and Tommy Croft. The 250 and 500 Expert shows wer:, combines (which should give you an Idea as to what type of day it was) and Croft, who has looked sharp the past few weeks, had his 250 Maico really tuned. Boydstun, fully recovered from his injuries, was mounted on a Franks, which is short for a motorcycle designed and built by CMC head Kelvin Franks. There they were, Boydstun and Croft, running one-two well out in front of the pack. Tommy had worked up to this position and was clawing for an opening. Even though his first place 250 position wasn't in jeopardy, the principle of the thing was still there, so he kept dogging Boydstun, to no avail. The second time they went off, it was _ a different story. Croft broke to the lead and Boydstun got an unassumning drive putting him back in the pack. He worked up to second but could never catch the fleeing Cro ft. Dave Carlson showed up on a Vamaha that is supposed to be "really hot" and trick, like only one or two of them in the country. Whether this is true or nol, what occurred is: Carlson smoked in both Expert heats and won the class easily. "Oh, that's interesting", was all Kel Franks uttered as he went over the Junior results.]eff Howe (Hus) had won the 250 Jrs., one of the largest classes of the day, by finishing fourth twice and tnird once. All three winners Ueff Bruns, Dave Hall and Loren Hall), did lousy when not in the lead. The same apparently holds true for those in second. Ves, it was a relaxing day ...especially· for the scorers. Like the 500 Jrs.: the leader ran OU t of gas in the second moto midway through the ra~e, pushed to the finish line and watched the race till its' end. He then pushed across to take, get this, third. Hmmm, small class. USMRC M X i - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - by Pat Gross EL TaRO, CAL., No .3, 1972 - Nine days ago Ascot toppled; seven days ago Lions fell. And now it was £1 Toro's tum. Could the Bullring lay low the high hopes of Tim Hart? No way. Vet one more track fell to Hart's one-two-three punch. Hart took on all three Expert classes, 125,250, and 500, to emerge victorious with a perfect score. How'd be do it, fITst time out on USMRC's new fast track? Well. that's just it, this is a Hart-style track: super-fast with tigh t corners. Dave Carlson gave Hart the only run for the money all night. If it weren't for Carlson in Moto 2 of the 125, Tim would have had a walkaway. Davy led off the line very strongly with a determined Tim a mere wheel·length behind. Tim tried to edge the pass on the tum before the jump, laying his bike down in the atte:mpt. Davy made the most of his opportunity, but Hart was back up and gaining ground. Tbe pass came on ·the last lap. In the other classes. Hart was so far ahead you would have thought he was last. In the 250 he took on A.C. Bakken, out from the desert to try his luck. His luck wasn't running so smoothly, as the number one desert runner settled 'way back in the pack. Dave Smith tried his darndest to break Hart's hold in the 500, to no avail. Smith (Suz) took second best. Ron Utaski was back on 'top of the ] unior Schoolboys, as was Ken Morgan for the lntermediates. Both were Honda.mounted. Howard Heirnstra (~)~eptthel00Juni~,asd~J~ Vostmyer (A]S) for 250 Junior I. Division 11 was topped by Rickey Sanders (Suz) in a near-sweep over Ray Surprenant (Mai). Mike Huhn's last moto win put him third on the Ajay. Mike Morgan picked up first 125 over Bob McDougal (Vam). Frank Steiner whipped the 250 Intermediates into line with a sweep on a Vamaha. Paul McGill (CZ) won for the 500's without capturing a single moto; three seconds did it. And the 125 had Norm Bigelow (Bul) leading. Mike Hailwood would have his feet on the pegs.
