CMC A s c o t - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - by Buzz Baty /Creative Images GARDENA, CAL., Nov. 1. 1972 - Tim Hart con tinued his assaul t on the CMC record book tollight by winning the 125 and 250 Expert classes and losing the 500 by an eyelash to his Maico teammate Billy Payne. He seeme~ut of the running early in the 500 when he got a bad start in the first moLO but worked up to finish third_ Payne won that race but had a bad start himself in the second. Tim won and Payne worked up to second. Then came the finale and Payne broke to the lead with Hart second, holding off the ever-pursuing Ray Lopez. For four laps Tim appeared more concerned with holding off Lopez than he was with passing Payne. But on the last lap and a three class sweep his with a win, Tim forgot about Lopez and pressured Payne hard. He nearly did it, too, a few turns from the end but Billy managed to hold him off to win overall, making him the first Expert to win overall in more than a week, other than Hart. Maybe being teammates had something to do with it? The 250 win was· rather a shoe-in. Dave Pessy (ass) got a miserable start in the first race and finished a miserable eighth. Then he got things together and pulled out the wins in the next two. But I-Iart won the first and settled for second to Dave twice to pick up the win. John Borg (Bul) out from Michigan to ride the Trans-AMA, shook up the Ascot regulars by doing incredibly well his first time ou t. Borg is a charger and he hassled with both Hart and Pessy aU night. Hjs nifty feet-up style in the berm was quickly noted by those on hand_._and his charges out of the gate had Hart and Pessy scratching their helmets in disbelief. Very nice job. John. Bryan Dodge (Hus) could have kicked himself in anger after he got aced out of the 500 Junior overall win tonight by Brian O'Ryan (CZ). even after he won the first two motos_ O'Ryan took second in each of those and won the last moto to barely out point Dodge, who had slipped to fourth. The tally: 1000 to 969. Derek McLeish (Yam) rode Intermediate tonjgh t as he should and pulled off the win ahead of John Catledge (CZ) and Wayne King (Yam). In the-always hot l25 Intermediate class, Ron Hamada (Hon) did things best and took the class after a third, second and first. Ron Byars (Bul) eeked into second with a 2-7-4 combo. To give you an idea as to what kind of nigh t it was, Dave Rodgers fell four times in the 125 class. "Ohhhhhh, do my body ache. " I n that topsy turvy 125 Expert show, it was rookie Tom Baugh taking the win. Tom only turned Expert three weeks ago and tollight started of slowly, finished near the back of moLO one. He bounced back and took second in the next round and then won the finale. In second place OA was Dave Pessy (ass). Dave wound up placing second overall in the 250 and 500 shows as well. In both of those he succumbed to the blows dealt by Billy Payne (Mai). Both Steve Hagg (Hus) and Mike McAtee (Bul) scoreq a third, second and first in the 125 Intermediate, but Haag won the finale and got the nod. Whew, that class never cea,es to be tight. Just think, third place Stu Egli (Bul) had a first, second and fifth. Rick Mercier (Yam) ran away with the first two 250 Inter motos and coasted home with the overall when he took second in the last. The 500 Inter wasn't decided until that final molo and the final few turns of il as Jim Cotten (Mai) and Chris Allen (CZ) were putting on a real show for the crowd. Jim pulled out the win by virtue of a first and two seconds while Chris could only parlay a one·two-three. Rob Turpening (Hod) had firm control of the 100 Juniors all evening as he rode off with the three moto sweep_ In the combined runoff for the 125 Julliors, Yamaha mounted Grel( Thompson rook the win with Benny Jones (Yam) second. Likewise. Steve . Kusiak (Hus) topped the final 250 runoff. Jerry Beaman led the CZ sweep in the 500Juniors. -, Leapin: Lions!
