.... One of our more astute powder puffers, who also does stunt work, informs us that it's really easy to take a Penton six-speed apart. Putting it back together is another matter, however. * * * * The Richmond Ramblers' Barefoot Enduro near Georgetown, Calif. will have some very interesting entrants. At this point, it looks like Dick Mann, Mark Brelsford, Mert Lawwill, Bruce Brown, Jim Odom and, possibly, Steve McQueen will have minutes assigned them. With that kind of company, the hot set-up would be to do your cherry-picking elsewhere. Then again, if you think you can ride with the big boys, get it on. Ain't none of those guys enduro riders, anyhow. * * * Meanwhile, about eigb t miles south of Coos Bay, Oregon a new motorcycle raceway has opened just off of Highway 42. There is currently a motocross course set up with the first moto (ever) at noon on November fifth. Tbere is also a quarter-mile oval, an eigb th-mile drag strip, and a strip for sand dr o Z I'd had a flat tire on my bike and hadn't been able to fix it in time to get to class. Worked like a charm; she said that I could take it tomorrow. So I'll just study for it tonight. Oh, by the way, I did the porting on my bike and it runs really good! Fan-tastic! You should try it some time. We could go for a ride tonight." * * * Gary Nixon was recently admitted' to a Baltimore Maryland bospital to have the pin in his leg removed. The pin was put in a while back to hold his leg together where be broke it on two occasions. When be gets out he should be faster than ever (and that's fast) because be won't have the extra weight to carry around. * ~ * And Yamaha is working on a Wankel engined machine for delivery in '73. * * * PLACE YOUR BETS: A late flash says that the big Honda street machine will be a 1000cc six cylinder while another equally late and informed source says that it will be a 950cc four. * * AMC, who has been *promoting the Saturday motocrosses at Saddleback. is expanding to AMC South and will be running motocrossers in the San Diego area in the near future. * * * The new Honda two-stroke 250, which sbould retail for about an even grand iri the US of A, is called the "Elsinore". Very interesting. Shades of "Lobster Dinner". * * * If they can get it prepped in time, Bill Friant and Dick Miller will be riding the Puch 250 prototype in the Baja 1000. The excursion should reveal any needild design changes in the machine. It is reputed to be a very, very fast motorcycle. * * * Mike Bornett will never get his Cycle News Hot Hats and we're going to squander his $1.50 on a six pack...unless he sends his address so Squeeky can mail his hats to him. Sorry, Mike. You're not famous enough yet to be on the Homes of the Stars map. * * * There is a strong probability that Don Vesco will get back into the National Road Races this coming season. In addition to his national prominence as a tuner and fast guyon the Bonneville Salt Flats, Vesco is a pavement scratcher of some ability. ~ w Z W No matter what you've read for the last two weeks in the Calendar section of this paper, Baymare and Motorsport are offering $300 minimum 100% payback only for their November 5 Junior and Senior day. They do offer 40% gigantic trophies the same day at every event held. The whole operation is under new management out there and is really a fun place to go. * * * REALLY LATEST POOP: Chuck Bower will not be riding the 250 KTM Penton on the western swing of the TransAMA. Nor will anyone else be riding it. The bike bas gone home to the KTM f!'Ctory in Austria for further testing and development. The word is tbat the Austrian tuner who accompanied the KTM got a little homesick and went home, taking the bike with him. Too bad he didn't wait until he got to the good part of the USA so he got a better impression. * * fashion show in Honda recently had a * Tokyo ... of clothes, not motorcycles. But the clothing was all specifically designed for motorcyclists, both male and female. The range included all types of "biking clothing from formal wear to sporty outfits. Honda is already marketing their line of clothing in Japan. American Honda says they have no plans to market the clothes in the U.S. Most Japanese sizes are too small, anyway. * * data got * fed Some bad into the' Papa some time ago. Tbe hearing on the status of Red Rock Canyon by the California S tate Park and Recreation Commission wasn't. The Red Rock Canyon item was not on their agenda Ocrober 20th, nor is it listed on the agenda for their next meeting, November 10th. An interested biker, Gilles Vaillancourt, went down to the bearing and there was nothing to be heard about. Inside word reveals that Anaheim - November 8,1972 City Hall, Council Chambers 204 E. t.ineoln, 2nd Floor the whole issue will probably be tabled until after public hearings in San Diego (last Tuesday). Anaheim, Pasadena and Oakland, coming up in November. You can belp preven t the issue of open lands ever being considered for re-statusing (Which, in most cases, means no bikes on them.) by attending these meetings and letting the Parks and Recreation Commi.sion know how you feel about public use of public state lands. Tbe times and addre.ses should appear in a box on this page. * * * SABOTAGE: Recent URA and SRA enduros have been the targets of deliberate maliciousness by person or persons unknown. Th is past weekend, the URA was hit. The URA enduro guys checked their course at six in the morning. After the first few numbers came through, someone changed the ribbon and set up a flagman directing riders onto the much harder Jackass Enduro course. It is hard to say who would want to do something like this. One th ing is certain: they are bent on taking the fun out of motorcycling for some people. If you were out there (About 30 miles out on the URA course.) and saw anything or anyone that might reveal who is pulling this stuff give a call to the URA folks at 213/421-9179. " " " NEW MOTY-SICKLES COMING UP: BMW is going to make a sportier, more powerful macbine in the near future. It will be the standard configuration (no overhead cams) but put out HP in the realm of 68. Of course, Honda is working on a bigger four or six cylinder road machine that will be in the same displacemen t range as the Kawasaki 900. * * * (Please turn to page 48) 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Pasadena - November 9, 1972 City Hall, Council Chambers 100 N.
