~ Z This is a statement for Cycle News by Senator George McGovern: ~ w z 1. Recognizing that the vast majority of America's millions of motorcyclists seek ~ only recreation and enjoyment, and do so by means of a mode of transportation that ~ is at once competitive and economical, I would seek to elimiate false stereotypes of (J cyclists. 2. Since it is evident that freedom and the enjoyment. of the outdoors constitute one of the principal pleasures of motorcycling, I will direct the Department of Transportation to give priority to solutions to problems of safety that emphasize educational approaches. 3. Recognizing that excessive motorcycle noise is not only an affront to non-<:yclists but works to the disadvantages of the cyclists themselves, I will direct the Department of Transportation to develop adequate noise standards and to insist that manufacturers meet these standards in a reasonable length of time as a condition of continued production and operation in this cou~try. 4. Recognizing that off-road motorcycling is a legitimate recreation outlet, I will encourage managers of public lands to make adequate provision for this use under Executive Order No. 11644, consistent with the rights of other public land users and with the duty of everyone to protect the land from abuse. 5. I will direct my Office of Consumer Affairs to investigate and attack reported instances of discriminatory repair and maintenance charges and practices which victimize motorcyclists. Special efforts would be made to enforce performance, safety and structural standards required of motorcycle manufacturers. 6. The United States has been accorded the honor of hosting the 48th International Six Days Trials in 1973 at which all the nations of Europe will be represented. I hereby commend American cyclists for their skill in previous competitions that has won this recognition, and I express confidence that this nation's riders will acquit themselves in the honorable tradition ()f our European neigbbors. c.mentary on tIle McGown Statem.t by Ron Schneiders WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 29, 1972 Senator McGovern today announced his policy with respect to motorcyclists. McGovern, according to his campaign staff, has been extremely busy with his Senator would have like to make an even stronger statement, but the time for research was simply not available. According to Miss Omang, the Senator will not allow any statement to be issued that he is not ahsolutely sure he can honor if and when he is elected. primary issues: the war, the economy, etc., and has, up until this time, been unable to do the research necessary for a meaningful statemen t on motorcycles consistent with his philosophy of governrnent. Today, however, under strong urging from this I:"porter and Mr. John Clausen of the Sunland Shamrocks, the McGovern forces in Washington "made the time" and, in a dramatic, one-hour-from-deadline action, phoned McGovern's statement from Washington. Another phone call directed the Los Angeles McGovern headquarters to run the Senator's signature as a closing to this article. The statement as it stands, however, is the strongest and most positive statement yet to be issued on behalf of motorcyclists, their rights and ambitions, by an elected offical and, as such, should be considered carefully when voting for President on November 7th. The statement reveals thought and honesty, nothing is promised that cannot be delivered by the Presiden l. Nothing is promised that is inconsistent with McGovern's goals for the nation. But what is promised could be the beginning of a new era of respect and consideration for motorcylists in this country. 0 0 R R 0 Y Y U N Y Y Y • Y Y Y Y Y Y Y loc. Helmets Headlights Oist.
