~ . ~ (Cont'd. from page 43) Ii' ecology 0- ,.. N ~ ,; 0 Z '" ;: W Z W ..J (J > (J concerns are compatible. Certainly there are problems to be worked out, but they are not insoluble problems. I doubt if there are any more genuine, or more genuinely concerned, ecologists in the country than the men of the U.S. Forest Service, and for the most part we have been able to work very effectively with them. I believe we will be able to work effectively with any genuine ecologist, and in time, the "eeo-freaks" will find a new cause. Right now, however, we need them. What good will it do us to have motorcycle if the air is unfit to breathe? Where will we ride when all our rivers and lakes are choked with garbage and the debris of sawmills? What kind of experience will it be to ride up Highway One along miles of oil-fouled beaches, smelling the stink of our dying wildlife? Where will we off-road riders go when the land developers have built their junky houses on every scrap of non-vertical land within 200 miles of every major city? Right now, the salmon industry is dying on the coast of Oregon. Clams, the delicacy of the northeast, are almost unobtainable, and swordfish are off the menu everyw!lere. Call me a heretic if you wish, but someday I'd like my boy to be able to see a redwood or a giant condor. Yes indeed, I want the forces of eco-freakery unleashed. And I amnotso hypocritical as to say "Go after the other guy but leave me alone." Either my house must be clean or it must come down. But, I believe, as I stated earlier, that we and our motorcycles can live in harmony with our environment. McGovern, in a general sweep of the environmen t, migh t do us in. I thin k he is a reasonable man and that if we clean up our act, we will be able to deal with him. If not, if he demolishes us in a general clean-up campaign ...well, perhaps our kids will appreciate our sacrifice. Motorcycle fOT survival mankind's survival - is not a bad trade. The real danger, as I see it, is that Nixon might well demolish us without doing anything about the really dangerous polluters. He has already demonstrated that he is willing to demolish us, so in that instance he offers no more than McGovern. But is he willing to do anything about the major offenders? In the same issue of the "Times'" quoted earlier, there is an article in which it is stated that Richard MelIon Scaife donated nearly one milIion dollars to the Nixon campaign, in 330 separate donations of $3,000 each. (It was done that way to avoid violations of U.S. law.) Scaife is one of the heirs of Andrew Mellon, the steel baron. The .Mellon family currently has large holdings or controlling interest in the following compani'es: Gulf Oil, Aluminum Corporation of America, Bethlehem Steel, Lone Star Gas Corporation, Niagara Hudson Power Company, Pittsburgh Coal Company, and Westinghouse Electric, among many others. These are among the biggest polluters (and defense contractors) in the country. What do you suppose that Richard Mellon Scaife bought for his $1,OOO,OOO? If Nixon is re-elected he will h;lve to go after some polluters to preserve some sort of peace in the country. Scaife has bought immunity for Gulf Oil and his other companies, and you can bet the other big polIuters have done the same. Maybe the motorcycle industry can come up with $1,000,000 too, but I doubt it. And if not, guess who he's going to get. Like Krol says, ''The gu t issue is whom you vote against." When the chips are down, I guess I'd trade. my motorcycle for a clean environment, for a job for a destitute friend, or for the life of a kid, regardless of color. Maybe I'm not really a motorcyclist by nature, as my letter-writing friend suggested. But then maybe some of you aren't, either. POOP Cont'd. Board member Robert Myers, a Maryland M/C dealer, represented the MIC at a meeting of the National Trails Council in Colorado last week. There they planned the second National Trails Symposium, to be held during the summer of 1973. * * The Asper! Racing Assn. (Motorcycles, not skiing, ya dummies.) informs us that Long Beac:h was not the first city to offer a course in motorcycle maintenance. The mountain community of Casper. Colorado did it two years ago, ·..nrough the Aspen Extension Series in Educatio;, offered by Colorado Mountain College. And it was for credit. Good for Casper, bikes and Aspen (Which was always one of my favorite place, anyway.) Now, about the accreditation of Colorado Mountain College...wait until Harvard hears about this? * * Machines that weren't approved were the Mota Villa 2S0, 350, 450 and Invader 750 (what ever that is). A bunch of Benellis arrived but weren't together enough in terms of red tape to be approved. * * * * The Ass. Editor just informed us that he was in volved in organizing that course in one of his former incarnations (Hi Steve and George), and that Colorado Mountain College will most likely be accredited as soon as it's old enough. * * * Dave Aldana will ride a Norton on the National circuit next year. Aldana has been riding a private Norton this year, but will be factory backed next year. He is Norton's flrst factory backed rider since Norton-Villiers opened up on the west coast in 1968. Norton's General Manager and Vice-President's name is -Robert Strange. Look for an upcoming new CN product: Cycle News Ear Muffs. * '1FlCK >6'-" Cl?A5fI ml'OI/GII 711£ &I,ewMT c.J?A5f{ 7H ~()()6H 7H-=: BRick WIltL, THe: 9lIAccK 8AE /$ CN 71Ie: LEFT. * * * SEARS POINT is dead, never again will bikes navigate that course, but Cycle Hills still has faint breath. * * We were chatting With' Mark Brelsford and mentioned that the new 250 street bikes of one Japanese brand were coming with six speed transmissions. "My God!" said Mark, ''What would you do with more than five speeds." Everybody at H·D knows that you don't need more than four. Even so, the H·D 750 alloy racers may come with a fifth gear pair in the near future. Seems that they want them for some of the tight European circuits where the road racers will be campaigned. ~{UJ(N6 w,e.v LEFT ANt> I/t/MP "12a:1r17 lW * * CAR~ HAAG A It/GHT ~ * . We have not yet confirmed or been able to deny rumors that the Adolph Coors Co., is backing the Sierra Club. Some enduro riders are boycotting Coors beer. * Something else that you can expect from Honda is 125 and 250 two stroke motocrossers. They were presented for and received approval at the AMA competition congress. Another machine that was thought dead but which appeared, still alive and kicking, was the TZ.750 six speed, four cylinder Yamaha two stroke. Omigosh, does this mean that Yamaha will be making a racing version? If so, you can expect them to start with 120 horsepower and go up. Maybe Kel is doing the smart thing by giving up racing. Kawasaki had its 250 and 441 motocrossers approved. * * Harley-Davidson's race chief Dick O'Brien is not related to look-alike Larry O'Brien of the Democratic Party. * * * The California Highway Patrol will enforce the 1973.off·road noise limit of 88 DbA by testing new motorcycles manufactured after January 1 as soon as they become available. Any new motorcycle which exceeds 88 Db cannot be registered under the California ORV identification system and can therefore only be legally operated in closed course races or on private property. The CHP does not consider a 40·50 mile desert race loop as a "closed course." * * * * HALF-MILE/SHORT TRACK? Corona Raceway, Hwy 91 to Magnolia or Pierce. Rt on Magnolia to Buchanan. 714/735-1705.
