~~-----~~-------------------~-~-- BAYMARE -----. by Art Cox SOMIS, CAL., Oct. 22, 1972 - The best Novice rider of the day was Mike Porter on a. 250 CZ. He easily won all three of his motos with fantastic speed and good style. The IT typc jump in the back straight allowed Porter to fly what seemed like 75 fee.t each time he wen t over this ubiggie". Speaking of Porters, Randy (Mikes brother) looked great also as he battled it out on his Hodaka to take home the first place 100 Novice trophy with a 1,2,4. The most exciting race of the day was the 125 Expert bash. Joe Root (Bul) and Ray Byers (Hod. Wombat) fought "side by side" for several laps m each mota. Byers led in the first with Root behind. Then Byers siezed the Wombat near the end of this 'mota allowing Root to take it. In the second mota, Root's bike sounded like it was "making popcorn", thus allowing Byers to finish ahead of him because of a de-tuned vehicle. In the fmal moto Root had the lead buJ Byers managed to get around him for the win. Root won the overall with a 1,3,2 with Byers settling for a well deserved second with 2,4,1. Mike Pace one of Baymare's better riders won the 250 Intermediate overall with a bandaged hand. Pace finished 1,1,3 with his recently "Mikuni carbed" CZ vehicle. S leve Rauch (CZ) rode strong all day to wrap up the large trophy in the Open Expert section, whicJe Don Hicks with his usual 1,1,1 rode his CZ to the top spot on the Open Intermediate card. The Hastings family dominated the Open Novice class. Walt and Cole, both on big bore Huskys won first and second overall. Both these guys looks as smooth as anyone I've ever seen riding the Swedish bomb around a Baymare-type course. ,: o Z ~ w Z W ...J U G Tim Jones, Charlie AnQel and Rockv Morrison in the 125 at Baymare. Dave Montgomery, who is sponsored by RCM Racers' Tuning, and who is also a recent arrival among Senior ranks, collected three straight wins against a field of 125s which included, among others, Craig Maisack, Glen Kind, Bob Southwick and Steve McFarland. Montgomery, who was forced to bring his six-speed Monark from behind the leaders in all.three of the heats, experienced his toughest bout during the "mning of the final round, In 250 Expert action, a class that featured some of the most hotly contested issues, all three heat races were won by as many different rider. Will Harper grabbed the first; Bill Sherman the second; and the final encounter was carted off by Joel Shedden. When the group rolled to the starting line for their finale, most anything that transpired would not have seemed extraordinary. herman and Harper were locked in a tie for overall victory. Finally, during lap four of the finale Sherman, who rides for Tommy's Competition Cenler in San Fernando, assumed the front-running spot for keeps, annexing a squeaky-margined, divisional win. Harper was 2nd; Shedden grabbed 3rd overall. Arnie Beaman, riding an explosive 350cc machine for Steve's Bultaco in Van Nuys, fought a daylong back-and-forther with a large turnout of Open Juniors. Among those finishing closeSt to 'the Bultaco ace in the fin.al results were Jerry Beaman (769 points) and page Dailey (738). While sending Kirk Benke and Johnny Pfeiffer to the racing wars, Revell Speed Shop in Sun Valley again displayed complete domination of a sliding and wild 25 Occ Junior donnybrook. Eleven-year old Mike Brown, racing a Monark for Allied Cycles in Newhall, won all three of his heats, posting 1,200 points against 100cc Juniors. John MacGregor (Hod) was 2nd overall. Chuck Herbert (Ric), who was a winner of the recent Can-Am series, got three straight against 125cc Juniors, defeating Larry Good, Dave Krikac and Greg Laux, among others, Beginner winners - and what a flock of bikes these newcomers brough t to the Dunes today - included; Ray Strunk (100), Steve Maxwell (125), Mile Daily (250) and Doug Dewitte, a collector of three straight against Open machinery. The Old Timer competition, it was J.1;, Siebrandt (Ex), Vidar Anderson (Am), a";d Larry Escammil (Nov), While Powder Puffer winners were Cheryl Acres (Am) and Kim Herbert, riding in the Novice class. ...
