BAKERSFIELD. CAL., Oct. 15, 1972
- The Sprockets MIC today presen ted
their 10th Annual Benefit Scrambles,
with all proceeds of this race going to
the Kern County Chapter of the
National Multiple Sclerosis Society. To
say the benefit was successful would be
a gross understatement, as over 1700
tickets were sold for the prize drawing
at a buck a throw. about $700 worth of
trophy donations were taken in. The
first main even t of the day here at
Sprockets Park is always the Feature
Main, which runs a couple of laps longer
than the regular mains and has a special
extra large type trophy for the winner.
Today the little guys got a shot at the
goodies as the 55 Junior-Expert event
was selected. Ricky Pearce put his
Bakersfield Bultacoized Suzuki right
into the lead of this, his first Expert
race. pursued by Jeff Bell. and Jim
Mclntyre, both Juniors.
Lyle Harris moved righ t in to the lead
of the 55 Novice class, ahead of Bill
George and Sean Randall. Randall got
under George going into the first turn of
lap three, then moved past Hams on the
last lap for the win. Bill Hartman had a
real come from beh ind win in the 70
Novice, having to pass both early leader
Jay Glover and Danny King to get to
the checkered first.
Jimmy Allen anticipated starter Bob
Leming perfectly in the 100 Novice and
jumped right into the lead. Dale Jones
wasn't too choked up about all that as
be got the drive on Allen coming ou t of
the sweeper at the end of lap one to
grab the lead for the duration. Behind
Allen, a tremendous battle for third was
going on between Steven Den t, Richard
Rowland and Mike Woods, with
positions changing in almost every tum
for the entire race. At the Imish. Jones
was the going away winner. followed by
Woods and Allen.
Mike Delliplaine had to come from a
fifth spot off the start to make up a
whole lot of ground in the 100
Junior-Expert to K"t the win at the
checker.

The 125 Junior was a brother act all
the way, with Eddie Mascorro leading
from wire to wire, followed by brother
Phil in third. Jim Janzen did a great ioh

of catch-up riding by coming from sixth
off the line to second at the finish.
Rick Delgado couldo't have had
much of a better weekend as today he
picked up his second double point'win
in two days. Today's race, just as the
other. was a wire to wire effort for
Rick, breaking out into the lead off the
line and showing the 125 Experts the
quick way to the checkered flag.
Greg Pi tts ran flag to flag in the lead
position in the 200 Novice and Mark
Davis seemed to have second spot all

tied up only to throw it away
attempting to pass Pitts by getting out
in to the berm on the last lap which
allowed both Danny Malone and Steve
Sechrest around for second and third.
With arch-rival Bob McClure out with
a blown engine. Jim McAieer really
dido't have any problems in the 200
Expert, leading from start to finish
ahead of Dave Baker and Don Roberts.
I t's not often that 'a pie-plater wins a
class, particularly any of the always
botly contested 250 classes. Leonard
Morgan did just exactly that in the 250
Novice, having to come from seventh
off the start to the lead and the win
ahead of Randy Lewis and Mike Davies.
Bill Kinney, Cecil Crowder and Shell
Borden all had a shot llt the win in the
250 Junior as all three held the lead at
one time or another. At the che.cker,
Kinney got the win, chased by Crowder
and Borden.
'Tubby' Tommy Francisco added
another forty points to his total in the
quest for the District 35 number one
plate in the 250 Experts this weekend,
picking up wire to wire wins both last
night at Chowchilla and here today.
Wayne King moved righ t in to the
lead of the 500 Novice, chased by David
Tolf and Larry Lowe. but Tolf was
having some problems with a new
scooter and Lowe slipped under and by
in the right-hander" of lap two for
second. On lap three, once again Tolf
experienced some difficulties and John
Alba moved into third, which he held to
the checkered.
For awhile in the 500 Junior, there
was only two riders still on two wheels.
as three went to earth exiting the first
tum. David Smuts moved out into a
very comfortable lead, chased by Shawn
Leipold on an Yankee that looked
remarkably like a 250 Ossa. It only took
Bill Payne a lap and a half to get into
the lead of the 500 Expert, in his very
I1I"st Expert race! Once in to the lead,
there was just no holding Bill back as he
proceeded to run away with the race,
chased at some distance by Jack Martin
and Lyle Moore
Rick Zimillerman
and
his '46.
Harley-Davidson are very nearly
unbeatable in the Open Junior class.
The Open N ovice-J unior Main today
was no exception as Rick roared righ t
in to the lead and never looked back at
James Reed and Sam Eichart behind
him. Sparkie Edmonston shouldered
Don McKay a bit coming out of the first
turn to put his Johnny's MIC Triumph
into the lead of the Open Expert Main,
and once there wasn't about to be
dislodged for the duration. McKay
settled into second, followed by Bud
Wall and all remained pretty static until
coming over the jump on lap five, when
his transmission tied up tigh ter than a
drum to put Bud out and Rothstein into
third. At the checkered, Edmonston's
Besumph had the win, ahead of McKay
and Rothstein.
