CMC L i o n s - - - - - - - by Sandy Cooke/C",ative Images WILMINGTON, CAL., Oct. 20, 1972Cold weather put a dampener on tonight's CMC Motocross races at Lions Drag Strip; only 150 riders showed up. Charlie Bower was back in full style by making a sweep of the 125 Expert class. During the second moto he had trouble getting into the top spot. Off the line takjng the lead was Tim Lunde with an' inspjred or ~urprised Mike McAtte, an Intermediate, in seconc;l. McAtte's glee didn't last long as he got zapped by Dave Rodgers, Joe Scotland and Bower in the next two laps. Lunde was stretching it out and Bower was battling into second. It looked hopeless for Chuck; Lunde's lead was too much. Then, the unexpe.cted ha pened to Tim: his machine locked by Buzz Baty{C",ative Images DEVORE, CAL., Oct. 22, 1972 - Rex Staten's two overall wins got upstaged today as the CMC Hi-Performance Mo toe ross Series came to an end in battle. David Lasch, the youngster who travels each week all the way from Arizona to attend the series, again entered two classes and wound up, the series winner because of it. Dave has spent most of the series riding one class: the 100 Juniors. Last week, smelling the overall win, he ente",d the 125 Juniors also and wound up winning both. But, Val Schmidt also kept pace last week by topping the 500 Intermediates which set up today's tie-breaking finale. Schmidt had first chance at applying the p",ssure in the reversed program, but it worked against him, as he could only take a second between Mark Samuleson (Mai) and Terry Trachy (CZ). Terry, who was only remotely in conte, ntion for the:: series overall win, said that if it came down to Schmidt having to win to beat Lasch, he'd help if he could. Schmidt never had the chance it turned ou t, and Trachy raceo to win. Lasch then headed into the first 125 Jr. Div. I moto with a bit 06 the p"'ssu", removed. It built up however, as he got a poor start and had to work his way from mid·pack to take over the lead with two laps to go. This win was important as he was forced to sit out the first 100 race when his Yamaha failed to fire. This left only the 125 dass in which to concentrate on the win. He won it and with, the Series title. Schmidt had to settle for second overall after his second to Samuleson today. Third place series honors wen t to Don Bridges after he moved into a tie with Schmidt with 46 points; he won the 100 Juniors after Lasch dropped out. The tie breaker came with Val's higher overall win total during the 10 event series. While all this was going on, Rex Staten was running up wins in both the 250 and 500 Expert ranks. Only Terry Clark (Hus) was able to blemish Rex's ",cord as he wo!' the Hrst 250 moto. ''That Husky of Clark's just has too much power," Rex said after that race. The equalizer came when Terry got a poor start in the final race and got stuck behind Bob Haag. This gav" Rex enough time to build up a substan tial lead which Terry only began to cut into when the chec kered came. The 500 was a different story as Rex just out-powe",d and out-rode everyone else entered. Wayne Boyer (CZ) tried staying with Rex in the final race, but he had troubles and finally dropped off the pace to finish third, fifth overall. Mike Krebs (CZ) picked up two seconds to take second overall. Chuck Bower had his troubles today, just when,it looked as though he had the 125 sewed up. He won the first round convincingly enough, and had the second in his hip pocket when his bike suddenly quit after two laps. Like a breath of fresh air, Bruce Baron jumped on the situation and won the final race after finishing third in the frrst. Matthew Roth's pair of seconds was good for second overall and Bower slipped down to third in the tally. up in the final tum before the checke",d. Bower skipped by to win with Rodgers and Scotland following. Bower easily won the next run but there was a switch for the number two spot. Scotland jumped out in front of Rodgers and held him off. But, overall, Rodgers still was second. Bill Rubly gave Dave Pessy a run for his money in the 250 Ex., but Dave always managed to stay ahead. Joe Johnston won't be around for awhile because of a fractured cheekbone he re.ceived in a fall around the sweeper turn. Lynn Stokey grabbed third overall with th",e consistent thirds. Billy Payne ruled the 500 Expert· with th",e gate to checkered first. Pessy and Robert .Elliot grabbed· the second and third purses. _ He. had to ride two classes in the final race but when it was all over David Lasch from Yuma Anzona won the CMC Hi-Performance Series. . • • Expert class under control. It's been a while since he's been beaten CMC Ascot: by Buzz BatyfC",ative Images GARDENA, CAL., Oct. 18, 1972 Whe", were you when the rains hit Ascot? I'll tell you, not.that many we", brave enough to chance the threat of rain so the 'turnout for CMC motocross was lighter than usual. And, ohh, did it rain. Thunder, lightning, hail. ..even the lakes got wet. Luckily, it held off long enough to get two races in each class completed to make the program final. As usual, Tim Hart was hard at it'and tonight more than that as he rode all three Exper.t classes and won the 250 while seconding the 125s and 500s. • Chief advisory in the 125 was Ken Zahrt who piloted a DKW to a first and second in his two shOIS. Hart got plopped back to fourth in the first round and could only take second even _ though he won the next round. Zahrt tried agaiJ> in the 250s but could only round up a palr of seconds to ace out Chuck Lunde (CZ). . Then, Hart took on his running mate, Billy Payne and the pair made it one/two for Maico and Mike's Racing Team fo.r the umpteenth time this year. Alvin Blain (Kaw) was third. ft is kjnda hard to not place in the top three positions after winning one of two motos, but Mike McAtee had the displeasure of doing just that in the 125 Intermediate class. Last week,' Angel Posca won the whole thing without winrung a moto. Tonight he won one and Mike the other. But Mike finished sixth in the first race while Pete McCormick and Ron Hamada swapped seconds and thirds in each to ace Mike out of the top three. It was business as usual at Ascot. rim Hart took the 250 Expert 90: •• t '
