Tbis pass would enable me to ride on tbe private property wbich it seems the police bate to see me have fun on. The pass, so far, seems impossible to obtain as I have to ge t the owner's permission, legal consent, and permission from the Chief of Police. If I can obtain my goal, maybe I can belp the police and the people find ou t and realize that the people who ride dirt bikes aren't the outlaws they are. made out to be. Sometimes I forget that people take television so seTiously. '1'0 me, that show was almost as important as my favorite daytime soap opera, "All My Children." And I'm juS't positive it had a profound effect in establishing "our image" in the eyes of the great American public. Be that as it may, I though I'd give you and your readers a little more to mull over. Below is the description of the "gang" in the program. It is is extracted, word for word, righ t from tbe script. "This is the new breed of motorcyclist, far removed from the prosaic image of Hells Angels. Danny and his buddies have at least the outward appearance of substance. "Their clothes are moderately new and colorful, and definitely not the standard black leather jacket look. Those in the group with beards and mustaches keep them well-trimmed. They all probably hold part time jobs and make at least a cursory attempt at respectability. But it's the beloved chopper, that sweet, pampered, customized metal monster they ride, which gets all the attention. With their choppers, they become as free as the wind, week-end warriors, part·time rebels on the' fringe of the estililishmen t." The crime here i ~ seems to me, lies in television's anachronistic fonnat and attitude toward drama, which allows a stupid writer to write a stupid play about a lot of stupid nonsense. Fortunately, television is not real. BOE-SANFORD Gardena, Calif. VOICES OF THE WEST '----..,------------------_. Ride. Is Big I:Irother here or not? BILL RUSSO San Diego . All law enforcement agencies in California have received very strong orders from the OMV to crack down hard on the green sticker deal. Be warned ... Ed_ LIGHT AND HEAVY Could you please tell me which bikes have been tested in your Iigh tweigh t review? Is it possible to buy back issues' Also, which weeks did you "test" the 400s? (Maico, CZ, Husqvarna) Have you ever done a similar test on Suzuki, CZ, Husky, Maico, Bultaco 250s? DAVID DAHMER Valley Center, Calif. The CN Lightweight Review (may it rest in peace) covered the following scooters: Yamaha, Rickman, Bultaco, Montesa, Cl, Husqvarna, Noguchi, Monark, Penton, O'KW Motocross, Puch, Carabela, OKW Hornet. The 400s were tested individually in issue IX/35, 36, and 37 and' run' together in IX/38. You can order back issues. We've been talking about doing a thing on the Japanese influx into the 250 motocross market. All the majors seem to have an MXer now. Even, reluctantly I Honda .. ,Ed. I Readers "!lay remember the gang's bikes weren't choppers, which suffer enough as it is, of course, that's hardly the point ... Ed. See S.R.D.S. ,...I ANOTHER IMAGE This past week-end, as a feature for a sports show here in Eureka, a young man named Denny Edwards made three heart-stopping jumps over eight to ten cars on a motorcycle. Yeah, I know, the first thing you're going to say is "Oh boy, another jumper." Well, I am not here to advertise his act. I am here to tell you what I consider to be the most importan t and most noticeable thing about the entire situation - IMAGE. So many of us older fans have been burned so many times by these so-called thrill shows that used to traveJ around. The crews usually looked like tbey had just crawled out of a hay loft and they surely didn't have a razor between them. Their equipment normally consisted of a Ie ak y old veteran that had to be towed to start and its maximum speeds was an oil smoke-clouded 25 or so. The crew hurried through their so-called act so that they could hit the nearest Deer join t. Denny Edwards and his crew are class with a capital "C." The green and white of Denny's {r-ish theme is carried throughout all of the equipment and immaculate help. After his jumps. Denny met with the fans - answering questions, signing autographs, speaking to the children, whom be obviously loves. He just smiled at the pttnks who infonned him that they could make "that-there jump" easy on their good old Honda: I have been involved in motorcycling for some twenty years and the image portrayed by this young man is what we need. THOMAS DILLING Eureka, Calif. HDRA ADVICES In November, we will have an opportunity to voice our Views and opinions by voting for the candidates who have expressed their support of sensible off·road vehicle legislation. We want to advise those of you living in the Hi-Desert area that such a candidate exists. He is Mr. William Betterley. Mr. Betterley is running for re-election to the Board of Supervisors of San Bernardino County. Upon re-election, he will become Chairman of that Board. He has been instrumental in ·opening new areas for our own recreational enjoyment, such· as; Deadman's Point, Arroyo Cycle Park, Oak Hill Wheel World, and the Bureau of Land Management recreational land near 8arstow. He has always demonstrated that he is a fair man, showing no prejudices and always keeping his phone and office open for any suggestions. Another candidate, Mr. George E. Brown, Jr., is running for Congress in the 38th District. His son is a motorcyclist, thus making Mr. Brown totally aware of the many problems faced by all of us. [f you reside in tp.ese districts, _or I'm a biker, 'a dirt biker and own a 360 Yamaha Enduro. Second, I'm a policeman for L.A.P.D. No. East. Div. The deal on "Mod Squad" upset me too and really ticked me off. Although the filming was good, it still hurt our image as ,bikers. Believe it or not, many coppers are bikers. Things aren"t as bad as they seem. Five or I 0 years ago, "motorcycle" was a dirty word. Today, whole families are out scrambling all over, even the mothers. I can't keep my wife off of my bike. The only problem is those 2% of bad guys. A year ago last July I wi'S up at a beautiful lake and I saw some bikers hill climbing in a closed area. Last July I saw the same hill and the winter rain washed a nasty gully down the hilL Bad news! On th'e way to work I saw two bikers riding on private property. So, in good interest, I stopped and told them it wouJd be a good idea if they wen t to a riding park. They gave me the finger and told me to bug off. When I got to work, J changed clothes and came back and cited 'em. Yes, public lands do belong to U.S. but we must go about it the right way to use them for riding. For a start, the division I work in has started a mini·bike and motorcycle club called the Broken Spokes. We have meetings t\"Iice a month and have outings once a month. We used to have problems of riders on pdvate property, but not anymore. If you need legal advice or a cop's view on anything, please write to me and I'll do the best I can to answer your questions. DAVID HACKER c/o L.A.P.D. No. East Division 6045 York Blvd. Los Angeles, Calif. Readers might note there are other "bike cops" such as Gene Cannady of the Badgers M.e. and Jack Knebel ... Ed. HANDLED I received my Shamrocks Hare & Hound results. There was a note why No. 260 was disqualified. The rider was giving a Shamrock Road Patrol youngster a bad time. ' The patrols father, Tom Center says he will "handle" the matter. 1£ Tom needs any assistllnce, which I doubt, John McCowan, Hookie, and I will be glad to help. These pa trol riders' "re for everybody's safety. Even the (53 year) old man takes their orders. WES ANDERSON, SR. 0-37 - 691' Los Angeles, Calif. SOMETHrNG'S WRONG HERE }Veil today I rode the "SRA Chinese Firedrill, Ripoff Enduro". What an adventure! Never before have I seen 30 riders allover the hills looking for more red ribbon. I laughed until I cried (I cried because I was lost). There was obviously something wrong with the course markings. SRA usually does a fantastic job of putting on events. There were rumors of foul play. All things considered it is unfortnuate that the clubs and organcizers don't remove the ribbon and arrows after the ~vents. While we were lost we saw orange ribbon, yellow ribbon, red ribbon, arrows, etc. These didn't help at all in finding the right trail. At least I got a finisher pin. TIM ELLIOTT No. I5B SRA Burbank, Calif.
