Romero then dropped to third with Mulder getting fourth. The actual Race of Champions was run prior to the Expert Main and featured the winners of all. the dirt track Nationals from 1972. The poll position went to Dave Sehl, winner of the Atlanta Mile. Starting in the second position was Mark Brelsfnrd, winner of Louisville and Salem. Third starting position went to Gary Scott, winner of the Ascot Half-mile. Starting fourth was Chuck Palmgren winner at Roosevelt and Indy. In the fifth starting position was Mert Lawwill winner of Columbus. Winner of Colorado Springs and San Jose mile, starting sixth, was Jim Rice. The winner of the Homewood Mile, starting seventh, 1972 Number One Dick Mann. The winner of the San Jose Half-mile starting in the eigh th position was tene Romero. For the first three laps it looked like the man to beat would be Gary Scott. Lawwill was running second and Dave Sehl third. On lap four Sehl passed Lawwill and started moving up on Scott. For laps four through nine it looked as though Scott was the man to win. On lap ten Sehl moved up on Scott going into tum one, when a rocker arm on Scott's scooter decidea to break. Sehl took the lead followed by Lawwill, Palmgren Brelsford, Rice, Romero, Scott and Dick Mann. For his efforts Sehl received six Gary Scott and Mert Lawwill were fast, but plagued by mechanical woes. a Scott Brelsford won a Dunecycle and nearly flipped it over playing. foot trophy, ,vhich was taller than Dave, and eleven hundred shiny new silver dollars. In the Expert Main, Chuck Palmgren led for the first halfcmile, but none other than Dave Sehl was first down the back chute, and from then on it was smooth Sehling (sic) for the Canadian Harley Rider. Gary Scott made the Main after some frantic wrenching by his crew to replace the broken rocker which developed in the Race of Champions. With the repaired motor Scott was able to take second followed (irr order) by: Chuck Palmgren, Mike Kidd, Jim Rice, Kenny Roberts, Dave Aldana, Gene Romero, John Hateley, Frank Gillespie, Terry Dorsch, and Don Castro. As the program came to a close one looked at the man from Canada with a great deal of respect. Dave Sehl, from Waterdown, Ontario, Canada, in one day of racing, set a new one lap track record of 26.10, set 'a new ten lap record of 4:25.62, then took his Harley oul and wOn the Race of Champions. As an encore Sehl made one more curtain call to win the Expert Main. Three wins out of three races is a superb performance, plus two new track records. As in the past William King and Bob B arkhimer Associates, through the efforts of Chuck Guliuzzo, put together another. smooth running near perfect program. Bruce Tow'"!send came from Oklahoma and gave Scott Brelsford a heck of a run.
