NRA Deadman's Point
..
....;,
by The Shadow
VICTORVILLE, CAL., Oct. 8, 1972 Wanning up a week in advance of the
big "Suzuki Series" which gets
underway Sunday, Oct. 15, the NRA
played host to a motocross card at
Deadman's Point, near Victorville,
Sunday.
With all eyes trained towards the big
'series, the turnout Sunday was nothing
to write home to mother about. Still the
moderate turnout of riders experienced
a lot of riding, as Jack Barbacovi; who
ran the show feels everybody who
shows up should be tired when they go
_
home.
Today's winners were Bobbie
Gonzales (Han), Minibikes, 10 and over;
Kevin Woody (Han), Minibikes, under
10;Jack Boone (H-D), 100Juniors; Bill
Tarling (Sac), 125 Juniors; Glen Brittner
(Oss), 250 Juniors; Jim Rich (Suz),
Open Juniors; Morgan Molocco (Yam),
250 Intermediates; and Ron Burns
(Oss), 250 Seniors.
As is always the case with the NRA,
25 percent trophies are awarded to
classed under Expert, with a 100
percen t payback going to the Expert.
AMC Saddleback
_
by Kent Nicholls
lRV1NE, CAL., Sept. 30, 1972 - A few
weeks back when AMC was having their
Awards Presentation, the M.C. was Jeff
J ames, the P.R. man for Saddleback
Park and he told the people that
Saddleback really cares about the racers.
A display of propaganda being born
righ t? Wrong.
Today was the third of twelve races
in the Smuggler Series and it was also
125 Novice Fredo Radel's day as he
finally convinced his Puch to stay
together and he handily won all three
motos.
In the hotly contested 125 Jr. class,
Robert Williams (Suz) and John
Dickenson (Pen) (who, by the way, won
AMC's last series.) did battle for three
motos. But each time the flag fell, it was
Williams just in fron t, giving him a win
for the day and Dickenson second.
1n the same class, Pen ton pilot Chris
Yoder and Don Wickenham (Yam) also
did battle for third spot, but after three
motos, each had' the same number of
points and had to settle for a tied third
place.
The 250 Jr/lnt Combined class was
full-sized today with a fantastic five-way
duel between (in the order they
fwished). Int's Richard Keftner (Bul),
Ron Bandy (CZ), Dennis Miles (Bul) ,Jr.
Ed Gember (Mai) and Bill Conroy (Mai).
Each led at one time or another during
the day and they were always close
together.
Today marked the fourth race of the
Yamaha Mini-Cycles Series, being held
in conjunction with the Smuggler
Trailer Series. Today also marked
over·.,(even class Brad Dutoit's (Hon)
fourth straight win. Again today,
though, he was pushed hard by
under-eleveners Brad Roberts and Jeff
Ward (Hondas both), and was in fact
beat by Ward in the first mota. But
Dutoit came back to win the last two
motos and Ward had to settle for a
second behind Roberts in their class.
Escape Country MX . . . . : . . - - - - - - - - - - by Mike Capalite
ESCAPE COUNTRY, Sept. 17,1972After viewing the Escape Country
motocross track for the first time at the
invitational last week, it seems that
many riders have decided that this is the
place to race. With the entries in all the
classes more than doubling what they
have been in previous races, there was
action and racing aplen ty.
In keeping with their policy of
starting the large bore machines first
one week and the little ones first the
next, it was the mini-enduros that led
off the action. It was Robert Mosser on
a Yamaha taking a win in the first day
class while Geoff Singer topped the
beginner class with his Honda. The 100
class was represented by four divisions.
first day, Beginner, Novice and Expert
with the wins going to Robert Knowles
(Hod), Cliff Russell (Kaw) , Lane
Steeber (Yam), and Kevin Crawford
(Ric) respectively.
By virtue of being the class with the
largest number of entries, the 125cc
riders were broken in LO five divisions as
Tim Gavin on his Yamaha won the first
Day class while-Eddie Coult~r took home
tlle gold in the Beginners. Ron Kramer
inYA
held up for the Yamaha marquee in the
Novice djvision while Brad McKee came
through for Bultaco in the Amateur
class. Bringing home the top money in
the 125 Expert class was Mike Paulsell
on a I'enton with Jeff Blix and his
Monarch in second place just one point
ahead of third spot man.
Trophies in -the 185 classes went to
Mark Hemsworth for his efforts on his
Suzuki in the First Day division and
Nick Simmons (Yam) against the
Novices. As usual the 250 class was
swamped with entries with one of the
largest turnou ts in the First Day class
ever which made it a hard win for Greg
Berg on his Su
