The team is: Nigel Boocock (Captain and manager), Chris Pusey, Eric Broadbelt, Malcolm Ballard, Peter Collins, Bob Kilby and Arnold l:laley. Boocock is the only rider to compete in this year's World Championship final. Three riders from one club have been selected ~ Broadbelt, Pusey and Collifls. They are from Belle Vue, the team which has won the British League Championship this year. Pusey has toured before but for the other two youngsters it will be their first taste of the Aussie sun. Also new to tbe Antipodes is Ballard, a 20 year old throttle thumping merchant from Eastbourne. Ballard is basically a Second Division rider but so great is the faith the selectors have in him that he has been given the nod over more established in temationals. This is considered in some quarters as being in line with the new English policy of building for the future with the younger talent now rising to the surface. Many top riders declined the offer of a trip this year, including previous tourists, Eric Boocock, Ray Wilson,Jim McMlJlan, Terry Betts, Martin Ashby, and new sensation, John Louis. Costa Mesa Speedway by Jennie Johnson COSTA MESA, CAL., Oct. 6, 1972 Tonigh t Ed Williams proved that he has an excellent chance of becoming the next National Champion on October 20. Williams was ou t with a broken collarbone and just recently was in England to watch the World Championships, but tonight he raced as though he had been here every Friday night since the season began. Due to two restarts, Williams had to win the Handicap MainE ven t three times before he won it legally. He would roll off the 20 yard line into the lead and manage to hold it all the time. " Larry Moon and Jim Gresham fell in the second lap which caused a pileup in the beginning of the original race .. In the first restart, Scott Autrey and Steve ..... Gresham tangled also causing a pileup. During all of these acciden ts, Williams managed not to fall and maintained a heavy lead. [ guess all of the guys were too anxious to kiss the trophy girl, or they reaJIy wanted the trophy. By winning the race, Ed Williams picked up $50 from Premier Helmets and $50 from Bates Leathers, so I guess it was worth winning three times!. Behind Williams was Jim Gresham in second place with, his younger brother, Steve Gresham who was reaJIy cooking, in third place, Larry Moon in fourth, Scott Autrey in fifth and Bill Manley bringing up the rear. From the pole position, National Champion, Mike Bast took the lead and won the Scratch Main Event, withom too much trouble. Behind him was his older brother Steve Bast, who was pushing for the lead all the way. In third place, was Bill Cody, who was on the line between the Bast brothers. He managed to get by Steve but then Steve came back and passed him and didn't give Cody another chance to get by. Behind them was Scott Autrey, who couldn't get it together in each of the Main Events; though he did so well in the heats and Semi-Finals. Although Rick Woods, Mike Konle, and Larry Shaw, failed to transfer in to the Main events, they all had their share of excitement in the Consolation Events. In the Handicap Consolation, from the 20 yard line, Don Cullum won it without any problems. Cullum was showing his slick, smooth style. Shaw, in second place, held Woods back PARTS' CHECK OUR GREAT VALUES NGK Spark Plugs (Ii~it 4 per customer) .........•...•.. reg. now Motor Oil Castrol (limit 4 qts. per customer) reg. 1.10 .59 .95 . now .79 Oil Filters (limit 1 per customer) reg. 2.45 . now 1.49 Buco Leather Jackets reg. $49.95 . now 29.95 Webco Leather MX Pants reg. 69.95 now 54.95 Name Brand Leather MX Gloves reg. 9.95 now 5.95 Name Brand Leather MX Boots reg. 59.95 now 39.95 B'uco Helmets reg. 35.95 now 24.95 Competition Shields .........................•..... reg. 1.95. now 1.29 Helmet Vis,ors reg. 1.50 now .89 Custom Universal Peanut Tanks reg. 29.95 now 19.95' Diamond Chain (5{8 x 3{8 pitch) , reg. 14.95 now 10.95 Dunlop Knobby Tires (K 86 and 88) .•................ reg. 29.95 . now 10.95 COME IN NOW LIMITED SUPPLY SALE EXPIRES OCTOBER 31st. ____ Ii 0174 Ibs. o SLIM UN( MAGNETO CASE TRAIUNG'ARM CHAiN TENSIONER o MINAREW TRIALS ENGINE o LIGHTWEIGHT METAL PROFILES TRIALS FORKS o TUCKm-AW~Y ,UNDER SEAT EXHAUST o sale ....... u.s.disIrIJutar KNOBBY IIHOP ~ JOlLA.CA. 92037, 714 B 6212 be brochure despite heavy pushing. Woods came up third ahead of Mike Konle, Billy Cody, and Steve Bast. This time it was Rick Woods having an extremely hard time keeping Shaw from passing him in the Scratch Consolation. Given another lap, perhaps Shaw, who had the outside starting position, could have passed Woods. Trailirig behind them were Mike Konle and Jim Gresham respectively. In the Feature Match Race, 'Sumner McKnight won it from the outside position. Greg Haserot almost passed Summer in the first lap, but there was no stopping Sumner. It was excellent racing by both of them! Riding one of the oldest J AP 's around, Keith Tennis won the Division iI Main. Second place went to Robin Nicolaides. )0- • ~ Mike Patrick's YWHA ..
