, • , I , , , • CMC S a d d l e b a c k - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - by Buzz Baty/Creative Images IRVINE., CAL., Oct. 15, 1972 - When that dust there was settled ·after today's ninth round of the 10-event CMC Hi Performance Series, the only thing for sure was the winner of the biggie, a 600 Honda Sedan, wouldn't be determined until next week, and probably the last race of the day at that! Today, two of the four riders who were tied for the overall series lead dropped off tbe pace sligh tly; the other two won. Which means tbat Sunday at Arroyo Cycle Park, David Lasch and Val Schmidt will go down to the wire tied with 41 points. Lasch did more than just win today, he was instrumental in bumping the other two leaders au t of the top slot as he beat Don Bridl(es in the 100 Junior and turned around and topped the 125 Juniors Div. I thus preventing Dave Chambers his chance at keeping pace. Schmidt, luckily won't face Lasch as he campaigns the tough 500 Intermediate class in which Terry Trachy, only three points bebind Both Schmidt and Lasch, competes. As Arroyo runs the CMC program backwards (500 down to 100), this means Lasch won't complete the day until the final race. I doubt if you'd find closer finishes than that anywhere. Having one of their own little mini battles, only on a one day basis of course, was Gaylon Mosier and Jon Derhammer in the 250 Expert. Jon won last week convincingly at Carlsbad and he still bad the fire in his style but Mosier was the quicker of the two to overcome a mistake'. when Mosier and Jon pulled away. With Gaylon eventually taking the win, the final was set up as he and Jon got the good drives and broke to one/two positions. It stayed that way throughout, although Derhammer almost overtook him on the final lap. Bruce Baron (Han) won the first 125 mota and coasted home the overall winner when he took second to Barry Porter (Bul) in the next. Barry's 13th all but ended his chances in the first race but the win was good for second overall ahead of Greg Blazek (Pen). After five minutes of racing, it was all Rex Staten in the 500 Expert class each race. The real hassle came for second as Wayne Boyer and Mike Krebs, also on CZs, swapped second and third. Boyer got the nod as he took second in the latter race. In tbeir first encounter. both.got off well, but at the top of the start hill in the tight 180 degree switchback (~he course was _ run backwards), Derhammer's CZ bogged down and died. As the rest of the pack sped away, J on worked and worked and it finally refired, but he was dead last. Meanwhile, Ron Roberts (CZ) was off and 'running away with Mosier hot on his tail but only at a distance. He pecked at the lead and closed in to finally pass before spinning out, droppmg back to fourth. By this time J on had made a fan tastic drive and it bad turned into a four rider duel between Mosier, Morris Malone (AJS), Roberts and Derh:unmer. E.xit Morris with a seized engine and then exit Roberts as he eased off the throttle , Rex Staten on his way to big bike Expert goodies. COTT'ON TRIALS I.......dl.t.
