G.MRE Sout!J Bay Speedwayhy Tom Blattler CHULA VISTA, CAL., Oct. 6, 1972 No rider at South Bay Speedway in the California Motor Racing Enterprises professional steeplechase and half-mile programs has 'dominated the races this season like Sal Peluso who captured the 125 and 250 steeplechase and the 250 half-mile main events. Peluso is still the only rider at South Bay this year to win three main even ls in one evening and Sal has done it on three different occasions. Sal almost made it four feature wins for the night but a Triumph rider from Huntington Beach by the name of Tom White spoiled Peluso's attempt as White won the Open class half-mile. In that race, White grabbed the early lead over third place finisher Ward Ring wi th Peluso in the third spot. But Sal got John Hoy's Triumph really going and Peluso flew by Ring for the number two position. However, Peluso just could not catch Whit. Placing in the fourth position was John Allison (Yam). . The Open class steeplechase feature belonged to Ring from the start and Ward took the checkered flag for the victory. Ring's closest competitor was Triumph-mounted Sandy Armstrong. Of Peluso's three main event victories, Sal's toughest came in the 250 half-mile as road racing star Pat Evans rode one of his finest races ever on dirt. Pat took an early lead in the IO-Iap main with Peluso sJowly closing the gap on Evans_ On the second lap, Sal finally took the top position, but Pat still challenged Peluso for the next couple of laps before Sal's superior experience and riding ability was too much for Pat. Evans did take home second place money with George Voshell and Bobby Sanders taking third and fourth, respectively. In the 250 steeplechase, Peluso grabbed the lead from the start and never looked back as he scored an easy win_ The win for Sal put him way out in front in th~ 250 steeplechase point standings. Yamalu-mounted Pat Guthrie rode an excellent race to capture second place with Voshell once again collecting third_ Peluso's easiest victory of the evening was in the 125 steeplechase as he blew the rest of the field off the. track, Billy McElyea (Yam) placed second. Wow. A slide. No. Two slides. 395 T.T. and Half Mile by Imogene Rees ADELANTO, CAL., Oct. 7, 1972 - It _ felt like winter had arrived in the high desert. The air got pretty nippy as the nigh t wen t on, and I guess we'll have to blame the weather for the hard luck of some of the riders. Several of the races were a good to the last lap thing. There were new faces at 395 to give the local boys some competition and cop some of the trophies. The 100's got the show on the road with Kirk Doyle (Yam) leading all, the way until his bike conked out on the last lap giving the win to Scott Walker (Yam)_ Second place went to Thomas Walker (Yam). In the Half-Mile, Gary Evans (Yam) was in fine form after going down in the T.T_ He led all the way taking home the gold. Don Tallman (Kaw) took second. Steve Fortune (Yam) and Greg Wilburn (Yam) fought it out in the 125cc class. Steve bit the dust on the last lap and Greg laid it on for the kill. Steve. came back strong to win the Half-Mile after dueling it out with Bill Rickels whose bike gave it up at the finish. Albert Renz took second in both races. The 250cc had the same last lap problems as Jeff Clark (Bul) grabbed the lead with. Curtis Morland (Bul) riding hard in second. Jeff's bike ran out of juice on the last lap and Chris grabbed the win. Jeff refueled with Gatorade in the Half-mile and had it all to himself all the way with second going to Jim Nosek (Bul) in both races. Dan Rees (Suz) was the only double header for the evening and grabbed both trophies with a strong lead in both races in the Open Novice. In the all-Expert T.T., the lead changed so often it was hard to keep up. Jerry Mulkey (Kaw) and Rip Sweaney (Kaw) see-sawed back and forth early in the race. Then John Hafford (Bul) took up .the fight and poured it on for the win. The Half-mile was also anybody's race, but 8 laps takes its toll and Ray Martin (Yam) took the checkered flag first. T.TM.C. will hold it's last night race for District 37 at H.R.A. next Sat. night Oct. 14. Sign up time is 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. for Iigh tweigh IS and alternates; 10:00 p.m. for the big jobs. Right in that vital .020 to .035 inch gap. And the high voltage "zap" better be hot and right on time, every' time. NGK puts the power there via a special copper core. This "Heart of Copper" dissipates heat faster than ordinary iron cores. Which means a cooler electrode and insulator tip. Less chance for hot spots to cause pre-ignition. Add a long, heat-keeping insulator nose for fouling protection and you've got a wide heat range plug that runs at idle or flat-out. The payoff is in performance and longer life for two and four cycle engines. For one, two, or three cylinder bikes. Lawn mowers, outboards, snowmobiles and dune buggies. NGK's are ideal in four and six cylinder sports cars; in imported and domestic compacts and sub-compacts where revs are higher, firing more frequent. And they help power-up high compression-high octane, or low compression -low octane V-8's. Whether your €Jlgine is young or old, NGK solves the generation gap. Plug in a set. NGK's don't cost more.
