Jim Diamond finishes his 60 mph charge for the overall win.

SOGGY DRY LAKE, CAL., Sept. 17,
1972 ...,. A 35-mile loop th rough the
sagebrush and down the sandwashes set
the background for a sizzling ride by
Jim Diamond of Indio as he took a new
400cc Husky to the checkered flag in
the Desert Racing Association.event.
- Zig-zagging across the sand and
rock-studded underbrush at speeds
averaging 60 miles-an-hour, Diamond
flashed across the finish line about a
half-mile ahead of the competi lion.
Larry Mason on a 360cc Yamaha, look
the second checkered flag in the Novice
dasso Other Novices in the winner's
circle were Mark O'Connor on a 400cc
Husky taking third, Randell Martin on a
400cc CZ, fourth; Greg Teget on a
400cc Husky, fifth, and young Jim
Bagley on a 400cc Husky, sixth.
Bagley was naturally firsl in the 16
and under class. [n the same 16 and
under Novice competition were Richard
Luce, on a 175cc Yamaha who picked
off the 11 th overall spot and a second in
his class. Also in the under 16 Novice
class were Doug Peterson on a 400
Yamaha who took 19th overall in the
N?vice and third in the younger class.
Making the dust fly as he curled
down the last mile to the checkered
flag, Brian Cross of Palm Springs on a
125 Puch earned himself a 15th overall
spot on the N ovke class winner's list
followed by another small bike rider,
Mike Harris, on a 125 ez.
[n the Novice 250 class, it was Larry
Luce, Yamaha; Bruce Wedeking, Suzuki,
and Jim Elkins, Yamaha, in the one,
two, three SPOlS on the trophy list.
The Beginners' class, however,
au tnumbered the Novice riders two to
one, stringing out a half-mile for a dead
engine start. In this class, the hot ride of
the day came to the over 35 en try, R.
Mortensen, who whipped his new 400
Maico around the loop, taking the first
place honors along with a bottle of
champagne. ORA races in style and the
No. 1 Beginner and Novice ride horne
with the champagne. Behind Mortensen,
the Beginners' class saw top
performances by Kevin Porter, on a 400
Suzuki; Jim Davis on a 250 Yamaha,
and Randy Peers, on a 400 Husky for
lhe second, third and fourth overall
spots. Davis, from Indio, also took the
first 250 Beginners' class trophy
according to unoffical results.
