Santa Rosa Short Track - - - by James Brammer SANTA ROSA, CAL., Sept. 16, 1972 With the night raFing season drawing to a close, ou tsiders are taking a crack at the specialized team-cup sized racing in the Chris Beck Arena at Santa Rosa. In Saturday night's amateur short track, no less than a dozen riders entered from the Eureka area near the California-Oregon border, some from Reno, Nevada, and the usual contingent from Salinas, California. Ascoteer Rick Hocking, makjng his first 'ride in over a year at Santa Rosa, almost missed a transfer spot to the semi by trying the outside edge with overge'aring in his heat race. Not making it on the outside in a deep cushioned track, he came in line on the inside to rmish fifth in his heat. Before the semi-finals, the North Bay Club swore off the cushioned track and used a road grader to scr~p the loose dirt off the track. Hocking came back with changed I(earing to win the semi-final. This time he was undergeared, but he controlled the lead. In the Expert Final, winner Dave Masse led from start to [wish as he had previously in his heat race. Hocking moved up to second spot, hut confiden t Masse led by ten feet at the finish line. Allen Yarrow, a rider still in his teens and a frequent winner in both amateur motocross and scrambles racing, was one of two riders in his heat without professional experience. He won th at heat with no one even attempting to pass_ In the Final, he was in a three-way battle for fourth spot finishing fifth between Steve Pestoni. The Harley guys can't ride their Bultaco Astros so they have gone back to about 1963 in unearthing the old competition 250 H-Ds. Ben Ostarello passed top notch competition to win the 250 Junior final on one. Glen Oliveria and Larry Ostarello finished third and fourth on H-Ds in the 250 Novice final behind Bul rider Ed Clark. These Harley guys don't always do that well when they sin by racing on Buls. Ben Ostarello slipped from second to third in'the first lap of the 250 Junior Final bu t methodically came back to first passing one rider at a time from the au tside in the comers. Dennis Axelson wen t from third to first in winning the 200 Junior Final while Ed Souza moved up from sixth to fourth. With only the September 30 race remaining, the track championship is still tied between Junior rider Jim Perry in the 175 class and Novice rider Martin Harvey in the 100 class. Both riders consistently win their class. Appears that the tie will only be broken if Perry gets advanced to Expert or Harvey to Junior before the final race. Placerville Motocross - - - - by Bruce Young PLACERVILLE, CAL., Sept. 8, 1972 The big race of the night was between Dave Longcor of Denny Honda of Auburn on his CZ and Brad Lackey of Pinole on his Husky. During the first moto it was Lackey who lead the field. In the last fifty feet Dave Longcor pulled to the inside on the final tum and gunned it to take the overall win in the first moto by about tWo feet. In the second moto it was Longcor all the way, with Lackey getting a poor start and having to make up too much ground to catch Dave. Charlie Marshall dominated the Open Expert and Am races with two decisive wins. Finishing first in the Open Am was J im Jones. In the Open Nov class races the most impressive win-was by Louis Smith on his Bultaco to take the Open Nov Div I motos hands down. The 250 Combined Am Expert event was a real duel. In the Amateur class it was Brian Jodry of Levitt Power Tool Company on his Yamaha who dominated the race. A Honda took second place-in the 250 Am class riden by Thomas Schirle. 'The 125 Am Expert race was taken by Penton ride Charles Goodrich of Modesto with another Penton rider Keith McConnel finishing second. Puch did their thing in the 125 Expert class with Rick Clemen t of Orangevale Motorcycles finishing first. In the Div 1 Nov event it was Pat Wilson of Loomis, on his Puch, riding for Honda of Marysville. And in the Div II Nov run it was Mark Johnson the big winner, for Orangeville MC. The 125 Nov Div II race was won by a brand new Hodaka Wombat riden by Doug Kohler of Professional Cycle Parts. The 100cc racers were divided in to two divisions. Hodaka pilot Greg Martz of Roseville, riding for Boss Motorcycle Parts, took the wins easily. Greg's brother Dave finished second in the 125 Nov Div 2. In the 100 Nov Div 2 run it was'Jeff Standel of Banshimers Motorcycle who took the big wins in the little screamers race. Jeff ran away from the field in the first moto but was pressed more in the second moto by John Boxler who took second overall. t:. ....H·J..( h HERCULES DISTRIBUTING, LTD. 9827 MASON AVE~UE.
