Lettin' it all hang out in the desert. Do you think he saw the photographer? 395 TT and Half-mile - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - by Imogene Rees ADELANTO, CAL., Sept. 23, 1972 Don and Hope England played host to the Road Riders, including a most impressive drill team. Combined with the TT and Half-mile, it made for a fun nigh t for racing. The drill team displayed some of their impressive stun ts. The talen t of these guys is some thing else. The 100 Novice got the races underway with a big surprise. Talk about seeing everything at the races. Two big Harleys joined them on the first lap with red ligh ts on and sirens going taking the leaders Don Tallman and Gary Evans around the track. The boys thought they had been had for sure. Convincing the Harleys they weren't speeding, only racing their little ole scooters all nice and legal, the show went on with a tight race between Don Tallman (Kaw) and Gary Evans (Yam). They battled it out all the way, wjth Don taking first by a nose. In the Half-mile, they battled again unaware that Steve Sisco (Kaw) was coming on strong from behind. Steve let it all out and screamed past both of them for the win. Chris Morland - (BuI) and Gary Kauffeld (Yam) fought it out wheel to wheel in the 250 Novice. Walter De Briyn (Bul) turned it on late in the race TT Scrambles Simi Valley putting on the pressure. Chris couldn't be snookered and finished first with second going to Walter De Briyn. A newcomer to 395, Ray Martin (Yam) took first in the Half-mile. Open Novice TT rider Gary Kauffeld (Yam) grabbed a big lead and held it to the end. Terry Wyrembek (Mai) took a hard fough t second. Would you believe two of the full dress Harleys en tered and finished? Good sportsmanship prevailed at 395. Dan Rees had it all together (including a broken bike) in the Open Novice Half·mile. While Gary Kauffeld (Yam) pushed hard, Dan held the lead all the way taking the trophy home. Second went to Keith Edwards (Mai). In the all-Expert TT with a staggered start, the No.2 man, Rip Sweaney held the lead halfway on a super hot Kawasaki. Pat Dale's BSA proved to be too much in eight laps and he captured the brass. Sweany showed 'em how it's done in the Half-mile and grabbed the gold. Next week, Sept. 30, H.R.A. will have a double header. Regular H.R.A. TT and Half-mile Saturday night. Sign up starts 5:30 p.m. Sunday, T.T.M.C. holds an AMA point run. Lightweights sign up 7 a.m.-9 a.m. Big bores at 12 noon. M.e. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - by Ed Drechsler ELSINORE, CAL., Sept. 24, 1972 With apprehension, we climbed out of our vans to see what the new day had brough t. To our glee, we found the courteous members of the Simi Valley M.C. standing ready to help us through the day. Being that there was a Half-mile National at Ascot in the afternoon, 1 could only stay for the big bore action but here is what I saw. Tommy Jarnagan and Kirk Redding had at it. Tommy and Kirk both ride for Holiday Maico. Kirk is No.1 in point standings and Tommy just wanted to beat hnn. Moto 1 and Tommy jumped to the lead with Kirk rubbing wheels all the way. Moto 2, both Tommy and Kirk are placed on the penalty line. Tommy fights througb the the pack to take the lead on the last lap in the back sweeper, Kirk finishes in the pack. Moto 3, a good start and Tommy gets the lead with Kirk ruhbing his rear wheel for the entire race. Despite cen ter punching this reporter in the 500 Novice Main the night before and riding a 441 Victor, Mike Boyle grabbed a hole shot that was unbe\.ievable and lead the 500 Novices wire to wire. There were faster bikes out there, but Mike managed to hold them off for the win. Richard Denham (Mai) and Buck Rich (Mai) finished second and third, respectively. The Open Experts provided more than their share of excitemen t as John Sprague and Vic Hannan battled it out. In a very hard fought duel, Vic won the first moto with John second. The second moto saw John grab the lead away from Vic and hold it. This tied the two Experts going into the third moto. The start of Mow 3 and both Vic and John jumped out front. It looks like a battled to the finish, but both riders slip off the track. Vic is the last one back on, with John finishing third and Vic, fifth. Sprague grabbed a well-deserved overall win. ~esults when they get here. This little guy is one of the fastest eleven year olds on any Scrambles track: Steve Sisco on a Green Streak.
