HERE'S DIRT WrenclJin' Around IN YOUR EAR by Alice Rhea Tom Poteet rides a Bu!. I know I said he was on a Rickman at Stump Jumpers' Hare Scrambles. that just goes to show that you can't believe everything you read. While I'm at it: Glen Bolenbaugh blew his transmission and DNF'd the same race. The number three position should be credited to Ernie Mahoney on a Puch. Reading the story over, it looks like I said Curt Gibson (Yamaha) is Amateur 1554, but I really didn't. I did have the first and second place overall correct. Apologies to all who were sligh ted. And remember, if I make a mistake all you gotta do is eatch me at the finish line at the next race and I'll correct it in'my Notes & Corrections Dept., which gets bigger all the time. Also, results are sometimes given to me by the club and are always unofficial. You gotta wait two weeks until the club puts out their official results to see if you really did as well as you hoped. I love to gossip. But not where somebody's reputation is at stake. I've heard rumors about cheating a lot lately. If you think somebody cheated, put your money where your mouth is . and make an official protest. And remember this: If a guy has to cheat to get in the top ten he can't ride well enough to stay there, unless it is a European Scrambles and he uses the same shortcut for a bunch of loops. But really, it just ain't fair to say you think somebody cheated because you never heard of him and all of a sudden he starts showing up on every results sheet and you don't like his face. 'Sides, bad-mouthin' ain't righteous. Mike Hinshaw, our local AMA fell a, came out to a race a couple of weeks ago to show all you young kids that he isn't too old to ride. Fortune smiled on him and his engine seized at the smoke, relieving him of the chore of finishing three loops Oustjoshin' Mike.) Have you sent your letter off to the Secretary of the Interior to protest J. Russell Penny's actions in the desert? Remember, if you keep it under 15 words you can send a telegram .for $1.25 as a public opinion message. As bad as most people hate to write, this offers a simple way to get you message to the powers that be without getting writer's cramp or breaking the bank. AU you have to do is pick up the telephone and call Western Union. IRRC, International Radio Racing Crew, announced that due to illness Grady Laferty has stepped down from the presidency of that organization .. Jack "Smokey" Forbes is their new presiden t and Bob Rich ter is the new V.P. I brougb t this up because I know SOlPe of you would love to be involved with this sort of organization and it happens that they are looking for new members. Don't be scared just because you think they will have a big old bunch of requirements. If you are interested, trot down to International House of Pancakes, 8555 Vesper, Panorama City at 8 :00 p.m. October 4 and sit in on one of their meetings. Involvement can be very rewarding. CLUBS I have_ had several in9uiries from people who want to join you. If you have openings for new members why not put an announcement in C.N.? HOT TIPS If you are supporting a family and don't have wage continuance insurance you are crazy. Matter of fact, it is nice to have when you get hurt even if you are just supporting yourself. Many of the insuran.ce companies exclude competitive activities, but there are a couple that don't. Rates for this insurance are pre tty reasonable and the comfort of knowing you are going to have a little money coming in will speed your recovery from any accident. If you think State Disability Insurance is going to cover this for you, you better get a copy of the rate chart and see how little you can get ou t of them for your deducted insurance money ...and for how short a time. The name of this new series is the American Indoor Championship Series and ·will include races in Atlanta, Pittsburg, Minneapolis, St. Louis and Oakland, with Madison Square Garden and Houston, strong possibilities also. The ope.ner is scheduled for Saturday evening, October 7th, at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. The nation's top riders are expected for the Oakland race since the final outdoor race of the AMA Grand National series will be held the weekend prior at On tario Motor Speedway. A $6,000 purse will be offered for the Oakland races. Due to an anticipated high turnout of racers for this new series, the AMA has decided to limit entries to Expert and Junior riders only. It was felt that by allowing Novice racers to enter the series the public would have to suffer through long qualifying periods and the entire program would require too much time. Bill Boyce, Professional Competition Manager for the AMA, has mentioned the possibility of the series winding up with a race at the Cow Palace U1 February', which would make the Bay Area the starting and ending point for this new exciting series. The AMA American Indoor Championship Motorcycle Races at the Oakland Coliseum Arena are slated to begin at 7:00 PM, October 7th. . ~ N ....
