Mark Brelsford, the new Orand National Hero, will meet Pat Manning (cheer!). Manning is a gentlemen's tailor and custom clothier by profession. But whilst he was plying his trade mark back in fussy old England, he raised quite a few derbys as a motorcycle road racer of some repute. Now Pat builds clothes in Burbank, California for a few rich motorcycle buffs and the better·dressed movie stars. This newspaper happened to be deploring the sordid haberdashery of some of our National Champions. One Number One failed to show up for a TV in terview recen tly because his only clothing was too shabby to be seen in. When we discovered Pat Manning also worried about this, the tailor and newspaper shook hands and promised to give the next National Number One a complete wardrobe of expensive threads. All Mark has to do is hold still for a couple of fittings (Pat makes house calls) and Presto! Changeo! A better tailored Grand National Champion than Bobby Fisher and Johnny Carson put together! Bring on those TV contracts! I t"s only fair that we give Pat Manning's business a plug, since he's contributing one·third of the cost and all of the talent to this Cycle News contingency prize, Pat keeps in stitches at 3407 W. While the riders figb t for a national M championship, manufacturers are involved in a similar battle for the o " manufacturer's title, based on points ~ awarded in order of finish. w The current battle for points shows Z W Harley·Davidson in the lead. Yamaha is ...J second, and third belongs to Triumph. U In many cases, it is a motorcycle > U manufacturer that sponsors a particular rider such as a Dick Mann (BSA), Mark Brelsford (Harley-Davidson) or Yvon DuHamel (Kawasaki). Their goal is to be in the winner's circle with the resulting claim to fame. Racing also means knowledge for the manufacturer. In a statement made earlier this year, Peter Schick, head of Yamaha's racing and safety division said, uYamaha is using rating as they would any other tool, to develop their normal production bikes. Racing puts much more strain on a machine in two hours than street riding would in two years. "Take a look at today's street bikes. The braking, reliability, mileage, handling and performance are much better than they were five years ago. At 160 MPH as well as 20 MPH, we're concerned for our lives and safety. The ideas used to build safe racing bikes are applied to production bikes," be said.
