CHOWCHI LLA SCRAMBLES - - - - - - - - - - - - by John Crawford CHOWCHILLA, CAL., Sept. I, 1972 The surface was super-smooth and the traction was just outasight from start to finish at Chowchilla tonigh t. The lead off Main was the newly divided, now correctly titled 0 to 55cc Novice-Junior, which saw Jimmy Mcintyre grab the lead righ t o~f the starting line and smoke through to the checkered unheaded. Vern Salyers was never far behind, searching for a never-to-appear opening, while miniscule Donny Howard moved up from a fifth place start to a closing third at the finish. Todd Parker ran away with' the 70cc Novice, chased by Brett Collins and Stanley Hankins. - Jim Turney never had any real competition in the roocc Novice, as he came off the stait in first and stretched in ou t to a very wide margin at the checker. Paul Falvey came in with a solid second, ahead of Al Arenas. James Crawford had thirigs all his way in the 100cc Junior Main. At the start Crawford was pursued by Jack McAda, Phil Waters and John Hollis. Hollis slipped out high in the righthander on lap one to' move around 'Waters, then drove in under McAda in the first turn of lap two to take second, which he held to the checkered ahead of McAda. Bud Sturgill grabbed the lead of the 125cc Novice right off the line, chased by Mickey Goodin and Charles Salmon. In the first turn of lap three Goodin drove in under Sturgill to nail the lead. A t the finish Goodin bad the win ahead of Sturgill and Salmon. Richard Horton led a paraQe in the 125cc Junior, pursued in vain by Scott Galloway and Adam Pollak. It only stood to reason that either Jack Martin or Rick Delgado would, grab the immediate lead in the I25cc Expert, as they were the only two riders left on the fron trow, everyone else was back on -the penalty line.Delgado had the inside line into the. first turn and took the lead driving out of turn one, chased by Martin and Neil MacDannald. Exiting the first turn on lap three, Martin went to the outside, picked up some extra traction and drove by Delgado to take the lead and even tually the win. Marek Arecas charged right into the lead of the I75cc Novice, with Ken Thiebaud and Don Kroeker close behind. Paul Boothe went hight in the first turn of iap two to take third, then moving through the last turn, really caugh t fire and drove· by both Thiebaud and Arecas and into the lead. A t the finish, Boothe was the leader, ahead of Thiebaud and Jerry Moulthrop. Kipp Cox took charge of the 200cc Novice right at the starting line and never relinquished command. Kipp was pursued to the checkered by Brian Smart and Jim Hood. Dave Baker moved right into the lead of the 200cc Junior, with Tim Phillips and Britt Davis right on his rear wheel. Roger Mathe~s slipped out high in the last turn of lap one, picked up a drive and moved around Davis, then Davis kept the gas on a bit longer entering turn one of lap two to retake third spot. Baker looked to have things all sewn up un til he overcooked it somewhat in the right-hander of lap five, slipped off the track and saw Phillips and Davis pass him. r----------..
