BROOKS AND BAKKEN 1-2 ITAGAIN. at th~ fmish big grin. I Iin~ with Gatorad~ and a Tw~nty s~conds lat~r, A.C. slid in taking·th~ ftrst Op~n Expat win and I~an~d forward to congratulat~ Brooks and thank him for an int~resting ride. A.C. said th~ cours~ had some "Good rocks." Jim Fishback (CZ) hard-<:harged in for third overall and th~ 250 Expert class win, adding more points to his bid for that" Ix" plat~. Jerry Jones (Hus) rode a steady rac~, fInishing fourth overall and second Op~n Exp~rt, wlllch is just where he was in class at the smok~bomb, with So Cal's Tom Smith (Yam) charging in right behind him for third in that class. Tom Poteet (Bul) got on~ of the best fInishes I can rem~mber him having in quite a while. He was sixth overall and second 250 Expert. Quiet Bill Saltzman (Hus) was next across the line and it is a good thing he is well-known as he slipp~d away befl're anyone got a chance to talk to him. Jack Knebel (CZ),still nursing a very sore shoulder, finished. eigh th overall and fIfth Open Expert, a1thougb Ills shoulder hurt so much h~ wasn't sure it was worth it. A nair of Kawasakis came around n~xt; the 350 piloted by George Walker and a 250 with Floyd Burk aboard. Terry Davis (Yam) and Robert Russell (Hus) rounded out the first dozen riders in. First Amateur and 13th overall was Bill Fleming (Bul). Keep an ~ye on that numb~r 1537. H~ is going to b~ in the top group a lot this fall. That oth~r Brooks kid did it again today. Cordis Brooks, riding a Hodaka prepared by Eddi~ Crowell, took fIrst Trail Exp~rt at 15 th overall. Cordis now is far ~nough ah~ad of the rest of his class that h~ could quit riding for the r~st of th~ year and probahly still be IT next season. Larry Ro~s~ler (Baj) was second Trail Exp~rt right up to the fmish line but something blew in his bike just before the ch~c"ered and· D~an Dailey (Hod) was right b~hind him awaiting such a golden opportunity. Larry still managea to nurse his bike across the line for third Trail Exp~rt. . "Pops" Thorwaldson, or Uncle Bill as he is known to many, CaIne \out to entertain us today. He and his Bultaco managed an 85 th overall. Asked how he was doing, Pops quipped, "Well, I can still b~at all the Daisies." Paul Underwood (GZ) was today's fastest Novice. He was so tired at the finish lin~ that he appeared to be in shock but manag~d to perk up enough to tell us that he is in the Antelop Ramblers M.C. and is sponsored by Mid-V a11~y. his ... # :"""":"~";..,:"",,",:,,,,;,,:,,,,,~~ When there's only one good line up the hill and it's damn near too dusty to even see the ground and this ·guy breaks ahead of you on your line then desert racing gets interesting. , I ' \ (yJ) Bryan Bennett fmished second Novic~ and second Op~n Novice, with Sweet Duck Suzuki's \ Paul Morrison righ t behind him., Numb~r 993x is r~a1ly fast. He was first 250 Novic~ at fourth place and got away before we got to talk to him. Hon~st, Steven Shalhoob, who rid~s a 175 Bultaco was first Novice in his class and h~ sp~lIed his name for m~ this time. His wife (girl friend?) also spelled it for me and nodded "Yes" when I showed it to them, so that is the correct spelling. Chris Fields (Yam) was first girl today. Kathy Anglin (OKW) took second honors in their 125 class and Joy Malis (Ric) was first girl Trailbike. All three girls are AmateuTs. Invaders' Saucer Run was a mite dusty. Benny Padilla (Yarn) looked like he had a beard when he finished, but it was just dust adhered to his sweaty face. Kookie was supposed to help pull tank cards but it was too warm for him so h~ lay in the shade panting and let John McCowan do the work for the ~am. \ One quiet, final note of competenc~ and for~thought: Invaders placed a trash\ can at the finish line. \ ... Wow. A wheelie! George Schmid - . . . to have surprised this gentleman doing something behind a puckerbush. II \ . I " II \ . Give it up! You'll never to able to see the course through he's got water. . a!!. th'!t q'!st::..tCoUQl!
