CMC Ascot - - - - - - - - - by Buzz Baty GARDENA, CAL., Sept. 13, 1972 Charlie Bower, the current "Mr. Ascot", didn't overpower the. 125 Experts tonight and he didn't sweep all three motos, as has been his style so many weeks now. But he did fInish first overall on his Metteo-sponsored Penton, while Mike Garrett on another Metteo-sponsored Pen ton took third overall. A most familiar narne, on a 125 DKW, made this 125 Expert class a real show tonight. Tim Hart, more familiar on a Maieo in the 250 and 500 Expert classes, made the Metteo juggernaut really hustle, as he got a second, third and fourth to keep everybody honest and working hard, getting second overall for his efforts. Many eons ago, it was written, ...:.and let there be ligh t". For some time now, the riders and Chris Agajanian have been saying, as regards the motocross course, we need more ligh t. Chris said to J ,C. (that's Mr. Agajanian) let there be light. And so it carne to pass that tonight, thousands of dollars were invested in a new pole and lights to light the way for competitors and spectators. Chris assures me that more of the sarne is on the way. Bill Payne has been riding for Mike's Racing Center of Northridge for some time on his Maico, and Mike Chamberlain has been after Tim Hart to ride for him with Billy as a team since about the first of the year. To say they did a job would be the understatemen t of the week. They totally dominated the 500 Expert class with BIll Payne getting first overall with a first and two seconds, to Tim Hart's two first and a DN F for second overall. That last moto win for Tim Hart was at the courtesy of tearn mate Payne applying the brakes to his Maico SLX inches from the checker, so that Hart could get ·the win, as a second place finish would have allowed · Bill Payne (101 and Tim Hart (2C) emerged for the first time as a Maico-mounted racing team at CMC's night motocross at Ascot. Riding for Mike Chamberlain, the two proceeded to dominate the 500 Expert classes with 1·2 overalls. Bill Payne's Maico is the one tested, slock, in last week's eN. Kawasaki-mounted Alvin Blain to finish second, dropping 'fim to third overall. But then, let's face it that's what team racing is all about, and except for Hart's Maico quitting in the first moto, they did dominate the field. David Pessy was in the 500 field, but he really came a cropper when he got his front wheel into the lake and did a horrendous, water-flinging, steaming endo when his Ossa's front wheel hit the bank. Spectacular as it was, David su£fered no injuries, except his pride, wet leathers, and a somewhat disabled scooter. The 250 Experts with Bill Payne, Bob Hosford, and Dave Pessy, were really the show of the nigh t. Up to the last moto, each of these chargers had a shot at first overall. Bill Payne (Mail had a first and a third. Bob Hosford on the Honda had a first and a third. Dave Pessy (Oss) had two seconds. The last mota saw Payne jump in to the lead, only to be passed by H,?sford. Then Payne repassed Bob, who was then passed by Pessy, only to have Hosford come back to repass Pessy and go up and get past Bill again. Bill turned the wick up another notch, getting by Hosford for the win bv no more than a bike length, with Pe~sy's front wheel alongside Hosford for third palce. When. that much action takes place in five short laps, you know those three were letting it all hang out on every lap. If it goes in the dirt, we've got it. (If it goes on what goes In the dirt, we'vegof it too!) t • .~b (()\)ll~~.~?~~~"C.~~.!:"~td. Los Angeles.
