Fremont Scrambles - Hocking - - - by Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., Aug. 30, 1972 When it comes to quarter mile short track at the Fremont oval, the name of the game is to try to beat Rick Hocking. Another week has gone by without anybody doing that. The class "C" Novice sensation laid waste the best that Northern California could muster and he beat his old motor, once again, as Pat Hennen brough t in second place honors on the Sonny Kenyon/Mt. View Auto Stereo Bultaco. The ten lap feature started off with Hock's Champion-framed teammate, Mike Renslow, leading the way on his Bultaco. On the third lap, Hock moved by point leader Butch Davidson and Renslow to take command. On the next lap, Hennen got by the pack and took off after the fast fleeing hotshoe but it .':"'. was no contest as the Fremont Flyer pulled wheel stands off all the comers and dazzled the assembled with his fantastic style. Davidson hung onto fifth spot after ex-motocrosser Ed Rosman got by on his Lancaster Bultaco, This was the fIrst time in some months that the district point battle went for Davidson, as his arch rival, Alex Jorgensen, was on the sidelines watching this Main. The six poin ts he gained on Butch the fIrst nigh t when Butch was on the bench were erased. The point battle for the J a Series now shows Hocking with a three point edge over Hennen, 27-24, with Renslow in third at 20 points, Mark Protz is still the big gun in the 250 Junior class and won his second in a Fremont Scrambles to Kole - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - by Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., Sept. 2, 1972 Fremont Point leader Jerry Kole seized upon a chance to wrap up the high point race and Blendzall championship in one fell swoop, with a double-headed win in the 250 and 500 Expert classes. For tonight's double-header, he beat out Mark Smith on a new Champion Yamaha and District No, 36's second place runner Alex Jorgensen. The District poin t battle between Jorgensen and Butch Davidson is still closing and that battle has all the earmarks of last year's John Gennai/Jim Foley battle that wen t righ t down to the last race before it was decided. Davidson fmished fIfth tonigh t to lose only two points in this fIght, but the overall is the real battle and there are still lots of races left to decide. Kole did the n~ impossible in the 500 Expert run by defeiiting Mike VanLienden for his fIrst defeat in nine scrambles races. VanLienden is also the second place runner in the overall battle, so the feather in Kole's cap is doubly long by thusly widening the victory margin by another point. This is a Iso the name of the game as VanLienden's consistency on the Selby Montesa had been eating that lead away. In the 650 Expert run it was once again Alex Jorgensen on his dad's BSA over Bill Landsborough who took over that point lead from Jack Scroggins and Jack Bonamarte. This track battle will continue throughout the rest of the scheduled race. With Alex tripping over irregularly, the outcome will not be known until the last. Thor aden, who recently turned Junior, has now acquired a 250cc Bultaco and razed that class tpnight beating outDan Young, who was turned when he got to the track and veteran Mark Protz who has over 100 points accumulated for Expert. The class that Thor left is relieved and the 250's won't be. To prove that point, Dave Souza won the 500 Jurior Main on his Schwerma Bultaco that has seen service at such placec as the Houston Astrodome ational. Dave was one of the fIrst of the hero Funny Car dragster pilots but quit when it got so expensive and fast. Sal Versaggi, Fremont's answer to ·the Mafioso, kept his cool tonight and kept his body on his 350 Honda for his first win in some time. ...., _ row over Chuck Erlenbach and Andy Ahlgren. His 18 points puts him in fIfth place overall behind Ed Rosman's 19 and he is still in contention for some of the booty that Jim ado", has collected for the last nigh t of short track racing, amateur style, Sept. 20. Other guns in the smaller divisions are Dave Murrell on the Murrell Sportcycle Bultaco versus the rest of the Fremont M.C. members that ride the 200 Junior event. Ted Davidson is in fIrm control of the 125 class after a hellacious battle for the win over Alex Jorgensen, who rode twice just for luck. . The 100 division is being led by Mike Bettt:ncourt but he has some new competition from Ed Clark and that battle could be real close. The SOUTHlAND'S NEWEST TRIUMPH DEALER GRAND OPENING FRI.& SAT.
