c. " '" ~ w Z W ...J U >- U DJIII John Bethea Joh n Huetter COUNCIL BYRON BLACK, WHERE ARE YOU? I see in your Letters Column continued interest in Mr. Byron Black's proposed jumping contest over the Grand Canal in Venice, California. As a charter member of the Kanal Kooth Klub, perhaps I can provide historical background to discourage possible fnolhardy attempts. So far no one has successfully mastered the jumping of the time honored Canal. 1 have seen two attempts: 1)' an unnamed kid of approximately 10 years sailed off on a fat tired Schwinn - but only about ten feet. The canal is at least twen ty feet Wide. 2) . One James Martin was propelled off the brink in a hot wheel chair. This, unfortunately was not Mr Martin's plan, but that of hi; un frustworthy friends. Mr. Martin managed only six feet before the wheel chair terminated in the mire. . As you can well see, the proposed Jump IS no easy task, Folks who are brave enough to take it on face an enormous task. My best wishes especially to those like Mr. Dirty Dan in' the three-wheel enclosed class. Make sure you bring both Pink and White slips. If you buy a used dirt bike make sure the previous owner fills ou t and signs a Certificate of non-operation (DMV form Reg. 102). If you buy a used bike don't throw the "sign.ed" pink slip in the tool box! You will have to pay $6 penalty when you finally do register it. If the bike has had a plate bring it along, If you have lost it you will have to fill ou t a form at DMV. If you dads have registered the bikes in your kid's name be sure to have him along to sign the form at DMV. If your bike has been a dirt bike all the time you have owned it, you too must fill out a form Reg. 102. (,Certificate of non-operation on streets.) Note: this form will also be required to sign in the future that you have not used the bike OFF the road either! (Your bike in the garage for a year or what ever after July 31, 1972.) If ynur bike is financed it will required a second trip as the forms at DMV have to be signed by the financial institute or legal owner. On Mini-bikes especially the home made lawn mower motnr types you must have bill of sales on all parts of the bike With you. Any mini-bikes under $500 (most are anyway) you will have to sign a "Statement of Fact" regarding ownerships. Like any licensing operation the personnel can only go by the "rules" they have in front of them, they are human also, so in the event of some p~oblems be polite and' ask for the Supervisor who usually cap straigh ten out most problems. You can avoid the "second" or the ' "damn third trip" by mailing the plate and papers back, after all 24 cents in stamps is cheaper than two hours lost work time, and travel time. P.S. AAA members, AAA cannot do "offroad" licensing yet! P.P.S. If you j"lst bought a used bike \dIrt) they w'ill ask you 'ybu got'it naw VOICES OF THE WEST from the buyers place to your place. Wake up man! S. SPAETH Monrovja, Calif. FASTER Just bought a new Yamaha 360 MX. It's now ready for a new piston. Since I am tearing it down, could you give me some tips on how to make it super fast forMX. 1 also need some tips nn back brakes. Mine lock up too easy. JOHN LOPER . McKinleyville, Calif. rUse a 125 ("'T-1 or 2) rear brake arm or shorten yours. Your 360 Yamaha MXer is plenty fast if it's in any kind of tune at all. If you want to go faster, work on the rider... Ed. BLM Cooperates - At that time, there were a number of changes being made in ·the BLM yules and regulations.. We were promptly advised of each and every one by the Riverside office. The last call came on a Friday when I was out of town, and the representative left his home number so that I could contact him on Saturday. Upon returning his call, I was advised that the bonding company had called him for further information and that the bond and insurance would not be necessary. That we need only verbal permission to cross private property. The BLM has gone out of its way to cooperate with us in our effort to pu t on a family enduro. 'Every member of our club will make an effort to prove to them that their cooperation has been· appreciated. DAYID W. MARIN President Pomona Valley Desert Riders Montclair, Calif. We all know that "Ignorance of the Law is No Excuse." My complaint is with the type of attitude that would harbor and indeed, encourage a rat - fink, cop-oui artist, espionage maneuver of this type. The Bonneville Speed Trials are probably the major amateur speed event in the world. Absolutely no money is paid and precious little recognition is given to anyone. Even' the distinction of a common trophy for class wins or National Speed Records has been eliminated. Yet, every year hundreds of contestants spend thousands of dollars and travel thousands of miles to compete. _ 1t would seem proper for the official attitude to be one of encouragement and cooperation to assist all competitors. Yet no one said a word to us regarding the legality of the sprocket change in question. The fink's loose lip soon proved to be the fastest thing on the salt, however, as it beat my bike to the other end of the track. Lest anyone chalk these words up to sour grapes let it be known that we req ualified and regaine,d the record. Further, we removed the shell and set a second record in another class. However, one minute mechanical failure, so common in these events, could have crushed our hopes beyond repair. What is called for at this time by myself, my team, and dozens of other competitors that I h~ve spoken with, is not the attitude of the High Inquisitor or the Chief of the Secret Police but a reasonable amount of common decency. RON SECOR President Bike Heaven Motorcycle Salvage Baldwin Park, Calif. And common sense...Ed. SRA-AMA Does anyone know what the S.R.A. (Speedway Racing Assoc.) feels they will be losing by not even trying to get together with the AMA for discussions about affIliation? Spee
