How Do They Go So Fast on Sich a Short Track? i N .... '" ~ 15. ell en " w Z W .J U > U Martin Harvey (256F) had to get around Brian Mariiy in the 100 Novice Main to hold on to a tie in the points race for the season championship. Cycleland Short Track Santa Rosa Short Track by J. Noffsinger CAL., Aug. 26, 1972 - People here usually point to the Expert Main event as the one race to watch with the fastest eight riders here competing for three trophies. When Dick Turner and Rollen Eskew are around one usually expects these two to run away and battle for Tirst place, however Dick was not up to par as he was riding an unfamiliar bike and simply did not go with his usual steam . Local Chico rider and favorite, Jim Hubbard, riding a Champion Yainaha grabbed the early lead and then held off Rollen by some five yards for the win. Rollen simply could not get those five yards back, no matter how much he charged. Jim was very smooth and very fast. Third was taken by another fast Chico rider, Steve Dietz riding a 200 Bultaco against"tbe 250 boys. Paul Quiring, after months of trying, Tmally captured rrrst in the 100 Handicap Final, and now progresses out of the B events and gets to race in the Scratcb events. He also took the B Main in this class and belongs with the fast guys. Dennis Cahoon rode to an easy win in the 250 Handicap Fianl. Tbe real race bere was again the fine ride put in by Jim Hubbard as riding from the rear of the pack in this Handicap event be passed all but Dennis on bis way to second place. Both Fernandes boys enjoyed a favorable evening of racing. Manuel beld fourth in the 200 Handicap Main, wbile. Jeff was doing it in the 250 Handicap final. Steve Dietz, that boy in the 200 class, really deserves some analysis. At the beginning of the year be was fast, but bad a babit of trying to pass on the outside in the cornen with too much speed and usually, as a result, lost a position or two because be got out of shape to-ing to con trol bis bike in an ovenlide. He bas gotten this fault under control and his battles with John Arseniak in this class are really something to watch. What really deserves notice here is that Steve bas constantly been making the Expert Main racing his 200cc bike gainst 250cc bikes. He has constantly been picking up third place brass here and he does it with 50 cc less motor. by James Brammer SANTA ROSA, CAL., Aug. 26, 1972 With guessers cboosing Steve Pestoni, Ron Davis found the right groove in the 250 Expert Main to win the amateur short track at the Chris Beck Arena. On a well·conditioned track, Pestoni had won a spectacular Semi, coming from a penalized start to fint riding on the cmco, • • I. outer edge of the track from start to Tmish at a far greater speed and distance than competitors following the inside line. _ Terry Otten, in classic form, held closely to the inside line, while Davies' speed held him at the center of the track. It appeared throughout the race that Otten had a set·up for the winning position though 'Davies was leading. At the finish, Davies was still leading Ott<:n in one of Otten's best rides, Pestoni was third with Jim Coats closely following in fourth. The pack never separated in the 250 Junior Final with Tom Fleming winning by a nose at the finish line and the three leaders at that time side by side. Ben Ostarello was an early leader with Fleming, Steve Knechtle, and Ed Hausmann side by side for second and Kim Seidler looking for a hole to get in to the action. They were this close at the finish of the 250 Junior Final. Tom Fleming 1201GI. on the outside. came in .. official winner. Ed Hausmann 121A), on the inside. was second. • Y. . . . •
