Dear AMXT FoUoweh For his last race of the summer season in Europe, Bryan raked in a nice second place in an international event. By the end of morning practice, it was obvious that the eleven nation progtam at Grace-Uzel, France would be dominated by four riders: Serge Bacou, the French 250 and 500 Champion, Gunnar Nilsson, Pauli· Pippola and Kenney. The track was short and narrow and required a lot of concentration. More than most tracks the start was all important. The ftrst moto, 'Serge Bacou got the hole shot and kept his lead. (Serge will be riding in this fall's Trans-Am and should get some top places.) Bryan started out in second place followed by Gunnar Nilsson. These three stayed close on each other's heels and gtadua1ly stretched out a good distance from the rest of the riders. Three laps from the end, the bolt holding the seat broke and Kenney's saddle feU to the ground. He soon found out how riring continual Trials riding can be! Nilsson took advantage of the situation and with a broken rear shock moved into second place. And that's the way the race stacked up at the end of the thirty minutes. The second mota, Bacou again led the pack around the fIrst corner. Nilsson and Pippola kept up an exciting duel the fIrst few laps for second and third places until Nilsson's tank split, leaving Pippola the number two position. Kenney worked up from seventh place to third. The third mota was Kenney's turn to take the lead with Bacou in his slipstream. Nilsson wasted no time moving up to third. With the spectators cheering for their champion, Bacou revved up his Bultaco to challenge Kenney for fIrst place. Two laps from the end the crowd went wild as the Frenchman took over the lead. Through the checkered flag, Bacou, Kenney and Nilsson passed within arm's distance of each other. Pippola, this mota, was a ways behind. although he stili held down fourth place. The overall results read France, America and Finland (Pippola) .. Nilsson lost a good overall ftnish by retiring the second heat. Californian John Barclay kept rolling to a 10th place fmish. The season has been a good one for the AMXT. We've scored two GP points and made. good impressions in France and Switzerland. With such riders as Grossi, Blackwell, Kenney and Clements to keep up the good work on the European front, America can start doing some flag waving in the international motocross world. For this year, this is Hot Shoe signing off from France. ~ N III 1@ W Z W ..J tJ > tJ The start of Mota 3 as AMXT """tain Bryan Kenney leads into the turn. Why is No. 14 laughing? AME Saddleback ~ Kenney leads French national 250 and 500 champ Serge Bacon in an 11 nation meet at by Tom Corley IRVlNE, CAL., Aug. 27, 1972 - While many of the top racers were at the Carlsbad Raceway European MX track trying for the AME Sportsmen event's monster trophies, the cash purses still seemed to attract the other gteedy Senior AME worshippers at Saddleback Park. Steve Shipkey (eZ) edged out the pack and picked up himself one of those foxy first placing trophies for a good aU around 500 JuniO! race. Guy Erickson on his little red 400cc Maico just barely got nipped by racer Shipkey ana held on to second place. Racing in the 500 Seniors was as competitive as in any Series race with Terry Power on his BSA thumper proving again that a four-straker can win anytime, if it has the proper rider. Terry made high time and won with some nice AME cash to boot. Bruce Torbett (Hus) was a second place wirmer who much of gottin' kind of woosy after follow.ing Power for SO long. Steve Shepherd on a Husky was racing as an Intermediate and was kept company only by the Senior with a lack of other Intermediates. Be sure to get in on some more super AME Jawa/CZ Series action on the fll'st and second Sundays in Sept. between Carlsbad and Saddleback and score on that new 250 Jawa/CZ from Pete Maly's Coast Mota Cycle as well as the goods that officials Keel and Jones are handin' out in the next 24!
