The two wins moved Ring ahead of 15-year-old Earl Roloff in the battle for the South Bay Speedway Championship. Roloff experienced engine trouble all night to keep him out of the top positions. Ring's first victory was his toughest, as young John Allison (Yam) battled Ward for the number one position throughout the six-laps. Allison's 360 Yamaha hung to Ring's 650 Triumph in the turns, but just was not powerful enough on the straigh taways during the 'IT Main. Dan White (Yam) moved in to give the top two a challenge. White was followed by two Triumph riders, Jim Steinbach and Vic Hannan. The Semi was won by Robby MacEwen, who was making his first showing at South Bay this season. Ring and White each captured a heat race. In the Open Half.mile, it was Ring from the Start. The race was scheduled for 10 laps but an accident involving three riders on the fifth lap brought the red flag out and the race had to be stopped. Dan White suffered a poor start but still managed to move to second on the first lap. Triumph-mounted John Caldwell collected the third position with Sal Peluso and Allison taking fourth and fifth. The 250 Steeplechase Main proved to be the most exciting race of the evening as Sal Peluso and Pat Guthrie fough t tooth and nail for the top spot. Peluso, riding a Don Vesco Yamaha, and Guthrie, aboard a San Diego Yamaha, battled back and forth during the six·lap feature. But Guthrie never caught Peluso after the final pass and Sal won his seventh feature at South Bay this season. Allison, (Yam), was ~e third finisher followed by Rob Morrison and Bob Anson, both Kawasaki·mounted. Peluso then returned in the 250 Half-mlle Main, and led the event from the start to take the checkered. With that win, Sal moved into second this season behind Ring with the most feature wins at South Bay. Placing second in the 250 Half-mile was Allison, who had his finest day at South Bay this year with two seconds, a third, and a fifth. Guthrie finished in third with John Hoffard and Bill Cain collecting fourth and fifth. " Don Corbett (9) dominated all the action at Trojan. Trojan TT and FT by Art Loya SOUTH GATE, CAL., Aug. 31, 1972A dozen or so of Southern California's better short-track riders battled it out in one of the most exciting series of even ts Thursday nigh t at Trojan Speedway. The only problem was, they were mostly competing for second place while Dan Corbett wen t about his business in winning the 250 'IT and F.T. Mains. Although arriving at the track with a cut on his left hand, Corbett (Bul) led every lap of both 10-lap Mains while holding off his toughest opponents, Rick Goade and Paul Coberly, both riding Bultacos with Number One plates. In the 'IT event, any of the three leading riders, Corbett, Goade, or Coberly, could have taken the checkered flag first. Goade went down, and Coberly managed to stay up·right, but both rioers were eliminated from further competition leaving Corbett all to himself for the win. Ken Provencio (Yam) finished second ahead of John Newquist (Mon), Brian Garcia (Yam), and Rick White (Ossa). The 250 F.T. Main, which is the next best thing to speedway these days, was a thriller all the way. Taking the jump over a twelve-rider field, Corbett (Bul), was hard pressed by Coberly (BuI), and the "Super Mex", Garcia (Yam). Garcia only a Junior in the midst of tough Senior riders, and the smoother of any of the four riders challenging Corbett, finally moved ahead to take second on the seventh lap, and actually closed ground on Corbett as they crossed the finish line. _ Hatcher, making one of the best passing performances in the Main, .finished third ahead of Coberly, Newquist, Larry Furu (Oss), Jeff Wiles (Yam), White (Oss), Provencio, and Tom Evans (Bul). . Mark Revels, aboard his Carabela missed a clean sweep of all even t; entered when his bike suddenly failed him while holding a substantial lead in the 125 F.T. Main. Revels, who has experienced nothing but mechaniol problems but who also appears as the rider to beat in 125 competition, earlier won both his heat (Please turn to pg. 15) Exclusive Dealerships Available.
