Not too many riders try for two years to win a Main even t, still consider themselves contenders and really keep trying. Ron Moore was the high point junior at Asco t last season - and failed to win a Main. Ron Moore has been a leading rookie Expert at Ascot all season but was unable to win a Main. That was un til last Friday nigh t. Moore would be a contender on the National circuit but he has chosen to stay home and race the weekly Friday nigh t Half-miles. Minor engine troubles, tire problems, spills in IT even ts. You name them and they have happened to Ron Moore this year. The saying is that the first one is the hardest to win. It should be all downhill now as the first one has come to Ron. They come hard at Ascot even when the Experts and juniors run an occasional combined show_ And so it was last week at Ascot. Denny Kanegae managed a fourth plac.e but the number one junior, Larry Gino, could only pull sixth this week. Gino has been in a late season slump for about a month. john Gennai put it all together in the Novice class, winning the heat, Handicap Dash and rwal. Rick Hocking and his teammate, Mike Renslow, dueled each other in the Dash and final, trying to catch Gennai. All three are getting ready for the expected invasion of eastern Novices during September when So. Calif. hosts the most dirt track races of any area. Rookie Expert, Ted Longwith, took a high flying spill in the Semi as his front wheel found the rear wheel of another rider. He walked away after a long time on the ground. Former road racer Pat Evans was involved in a three rider Novice heat spill on the south turn, but again none were injured. The National circuit is now coming back west and all of the Ascot favorites will be racing in Gardena every weekend until the track closes for the off-season months.
