By Buzz Baty GARDENA, CAL., Aug. 23, 1972 jack, the giant·slayer of beanstalk fame, David and his duel with that big cat Goliath, that man with the black patch over his left eye leading the Israeli arm y, are all examples in fact and Gction of the little ace putting the big dude on the trailer. For another example of the above, 1 offer Charlie Bower as David and his Meltco·sponsored Penton for a slingshot, cause Charlie won again. You may say, "What the hell's so new abou t that? Charlie's been winning the 125 class on his Penton with the regularity of the Italian railroad in the days of Mussolioi." But then, Charlie didn't win the 125 class, Bruce Baron did. This time on his Husky, not the Honda of last week's win. The Penton with Charlie aboard did win, not the 125 Expen class, but the_ 250 Experl. This Penton, of course, is a. 175 and there was no cherry-picking involved in this win either. Charlie came out on top over jim Wilson (CZ). Tim Ilart (Mai). David Pessy (Oss). Bruce Baron (Yam), Chuck Lunde (CZ), Bob IIosford (lion), john Rice (I-Ion). Danny Hockie (Oss). Charlie had 1,2,3. finjshes in the three motos. jim Wilson won the First moLO after a wild start coming off the starting line and on to the top of the crash wall. Bob 1I0sford got bumped and did a real scary flipflop end over end number off the wall, tearing out one of the top boards. As bad as it looked, neither Bob nor the Honda were CHALLENGERS' CUP SHORT TRACK Los Angeles, Calif. Aug. 26,1972 By K.C. In fact, Bob restarted to get twelfth posi tion. With no further incident, jim Wilson, showing signs of his old self, went on to take the win. Bower coming in for second. juejohnston bringing his Maico in third, Tim Hart, after a bad start getting in for fourth. The second moto was a real Pier Six brawl for the first two laps, hetween Bob Hosford and David Pessy. In trying to get around Pessy, Hosford almost went into the lake at the north end. Although falling. he didn't get wel. With heavy pressure from Tim Hart, Pessy dropped his Ossa in the exact same spot that Hosford had gone. down the lap before. Hart and his Maico took the checker, Wilson getting second, Bower getting third. The last moto shaped up as a classic, Bower could win it, llart could win it, or \,Vilson could win it. \Vhatever these three were thinking when the gate dropped for the start of this last round as to how they were going to win it, became ..cademie. Charlie Ilower pulled a hole shot, and then stretched his lead to thirty or forty bike lengths over second and third place lIart and Wilson. Charlie held that lead all the way to the flag, leaving lIart and Wilson to bailie for second place. lIart won that bailie, Wilson gelling third. That third place finish for \\'ilson is what gave Charlie first overall. They both had a first, second, and third, but Charlie got first place money, finishing best in the last moLo. Wilson was second overall, Hart third. N .... 0> .n Q. en " ~ w Z W ..J U >U r;====RACING SPECIALISTS IN AJS & VILLlERS=====il Jig S IJ '= MESA MOTOCROSS Barona, Calif.
