Lee may have taken home the lion's share of the money pot in the Expert Finals here Saturday nigh t bu t it was Teddy Poovey riding Tommy Conner's Harley-Davison XR-750in theJuniorroundsthat had the crowd on its teet. Poovey, a Dallas boy and local hero, showed the Harley magic at work as he cast a spell over the compOetition by pushing and bouncing his way to a commanding lead in all his races. Only after he had won the Junior Main did he let it be known that the Harley was brakeless and the throttle was sticking, he had been slowing the big bike by hitting the kill button. After the races an en th usiastic crowd formed around Poovey and the Harley and it seemed like every one wan ted to touch the bike. In the Novice classes Ricky Simmons wowed them by winning the Main and the Trophy Dash against always charging competition. Mainly in the fonn of Richard Bates who tmished With a sticking throttle and no brakes Teddy Poovey wowed the crowd in the Junior class. second in the Trophy Dash and third in the Main after a fantastic save from a violent lock-to-Iock near crash. A t one point Bates was flying behind the bike and hitting the ground running, fIrst one side then the other all the time with 'the throttle dialed, on. He recovered and shot down the back straigh t to th underous applause from the crowd. After the action in the lesser classes the Expert Main was decidedly dull with only R. Lee and Pressgrove in the really "go fast" category. This was a disappointment as it was rumored that Mike Kidd and J. Rawl whould show. Unfortunately they went to New Mexico and Pressgrove had little trouble defeating Lee. . '1 - , Paul Pressgrove was Expert winner. ... In the Expert Final Paul Pressgrove laps Gary Corpian. Robert E. Lee was second. Steve Hunt (45M) holds off RaMie I;!~tehens. Hunt was !,aurth and Hutchens seventh Junior. Terry POO~y Reddy:s little brother, won his race
