Cal-Expo Speedway----------------- By Pat Jone' SACRAMENTO, CAL., Aug. 25, 1972 - Cal·Expo held another "Southern California Benefit Performance" as Scott Autrey won the Scratch Main with Danny Becker in second and Stu Morley coming in third. The only rider from the Northern California circuit in the Main was Reno's Alan Christian who was black.f1agged for breaking the tape on the start. Christian's mishap was unfortunate because he rode with Becker in the Scratch Semi and beat hinl, indicating a possible upset in the Main. Autrey won the Scratch Final casily, running an outside Ijne all four laps while Becker vainly tried to catch up on the inside. Autrey had a comfortably 20-yard lead at the finish. The Handicap Main saw the riders from the North salvage some their pride as Reno's John Cunningham, as usual, overcame his 40-yard handicap to win. Neither Becker nor Autrey were able to gain a transfer into the Handicap Main. Cunningham's win was a case of the fastest survivor taking the loot as Mike Rooney and Joe Henry led most of the way before meeting disaster. Ronney and Henry went wheel-to-wheel for four laps before Joe went underneath and dumped Rooney, running over his head in the cprocess. Henry ran back to check on the injured Rooney and Cunningham cruised to the win. Rooney was slow getting up after the accident and was taken to a local.hospital for observation. The Scratch Consy wen i to Mike Rooney's older brother, Pat, in a reversal of the bad luck that hit Mike. This time it was John Cunningham who jumped to a big lead early. Fans were already writing Cunningham's name down as the winner when John inexplicably did a wheelie into the wall. Rooney then beat Bill DuVall and Jim Doron for the win. The Handicap Consy went to Jay De Beaubien who beat Danny Becker by .about two inches. Once again, Debbie Jackline proved she is the fastest female speedway rider in the state. This time she beat four men while finishing second in her Division JJJ heat, First place went to Roger Denny. StOTy by Art Loya Photo by Luis Garcia SOUTH GATE, CALIF. Aug. 24, 1972 - It was like old times for Chris Smith at Trojan as the Astrodome·bound rider came roaring down the stretch to take the checkered flag in both the 250 TT and F.T. Mains, Kawasaki-mounted Smith displayed a da2zling bit of body work as he came off the comers to challenge point leader, Dan Corbett (Bul) in both the IT and F.T. heats while running second. Taking the lead on the first lap of the IT Main, Corbett looked like giving Chris a run for his money but on the second round, Corbett's mount suddenly quit when an ignition wire broke, leaving Smith to hold off a formidable field all the way to. the fmish. Ken Provencio (Yam) finished second while Dale Hopkins (Bul), another top favorite making a return appearance, took third abead of "Super Mex", Brian Garcia (Yam), and Chuck Hatcher (Bul), Once again, Corbett led the opening round, this time in the 250 F.T. feature, bu t agressive riding, a trademark of Smith's, was too much for Corbett as he relinquished the lead down the backstretch. Corbett continued to press Smith for the lead, and Smith was having to perform hjs very best to hold off Corbett who appears titlebound thjs year. T,his event turned out as pure, first class, short-track action as eyes focused not only on the leading pair, but on a Junior rider, Jeff Wiles (Yam), who trailed both Smith and Corbett while holding off former speedway rider, Hatcher, in another duel for third. Allen "Buckwheat" Sweet (Hon) continued to show· fans why he is considered one of the most inlproved riders this year as he defeated four-time champion, Bob Sanders (Kaw) in the 100 TT Main, then came right back to trail Mark Revels (Car) for five laps in the 125 TT Main before taking the lead and the checkered flag only fifteen yards from the finish. Third was Sanders ahead of Elbert Turner (Yam). . Sanders, taking the starting jump ahead of Revels and Turner in the 125 F.T. Main, lead wire·to-wire with Revels riding Sander's exhaust pipe waiting for just one mistake that never materialized, Turner finished third. Bob Russ (Kaw) was the fourth feature winner of the night as he scored his win in the 100 F.T. Main ahead of Jinl Stewart (Yam), John Matherson (Hod), Ellsworth Miller (Kaw), and John Erickson (Kaw). The 250 Trophy Dash. action was something else again. Corbett held off Smith, Provencio, Garcia, and White for hjs win in the 250 IT Dash, while Smith returned the f"vor by taking the lead and the checkered on the final lap from Corbett in the F.T. Dash. Contingency cash awards were also presen ted to Main event win ners by B oge Shocks representatives of Dinlex Moto Imports. •
