EUGENE M X - - - - - - By Janis Randall Photo by Craig Randall EUGENE, ORE., Aug. 13, 1972 - The track was in excellent condition, thanks to the watering system manager John Milich put in, and the hard work he expended. They kept some of the track watered down all day long, to keep the mud holes deep and gooey. The mud holes were spectator favorites, but 1 don't think it was the favorite spot for some of the riders, especially the ones who got stuck. The Junior riders received trophies and the Experts received money. There were a lot of riders in the 125 Junior class, but Jerry Dewitt (Han), and Bill French (Yam), immediately started dominating this class with French winning the first mota and Dewitt receiving second. Jerry won the second and third motos. Jerry received first, and French took second. The 250 Junior class started out on a slow pace until Tom Whitsell (Bul) decided to pu t some action in this race and started pulling away from the other riders in motos two and three. Keeping him honest was Randy Patterson (Mai), and John Meusling (Man), who fared very well in all three matos, but Whitsell went on and received first overall. Bill Butters (Bul) rode very hard in all three motos to take first overall in the Open Junior class. He didn't have it easy, though, as he received pressure during the first half of all three matos, and bad to work from behind Bob Strobel and Eric Sanstrom's Huskies (Huskys?) to win the class. Two new features today were races for men over 40 years old, and a race for Disc Jockeys of local radio stations. The "Old Men" were dominated by young riding Rob Brown on a CZ from Portland. He rides as though still active in competition and simply left the rest of the field. The so called "Media Motos" ended in a draw for first, with Peter Patamus and Rob Bearden, Kawasaki and Honda, of Radio station KEED trading firsts and seconds. Ken Buirley and his Penton again wasted all the other 125 Experts. His style is not flashy and wild. He simply moves over the ground at the greatest rate of speed at all times. And he wasn't in an easy class. Rick Burgett, who, as any Northwesterner can tell you, also covers ground at an exceptional ratc, finished second on his Yamaha, leaving Buirley no slack! Ch'uck Sun (Man) was the one to watch in the 250 Expert class. He rode exceptionally fast and was quite smooth but was aced out by Charlie Patterson . (Hus) who also rode quite well, and had a little better luck to take first overall with Chuck Sun receiving second and not too far behind in points was John Waltm, ire (CZ). Sun was one of the few riders to have enough of a lead in a mota to do some aerobatics. His favorite was coming down the front straight, and getting beautifully crossed up at the jump at the end of the straight. Surely his luck will change, and we will soon see him first. Lodi Scrambles------_ by Bill Spencer LODl, CAL., Aug. 18, 1972 Completing the scheduled 10 weeks of Friday night scrambles racing left the track to Stockton's Alex Jorgensen, much the same way that Jim Rice has the San Jose one·half mile. Alex was the man to beat here for those ten weeks, and at the totalizer window he came away with the 250 high point trophy donated by Blendzall, the 650 Expert high point, and the overall high point. Keeping the large crowd on edge for the evening was a variety of winners that aren't normally up. front, such as Don Shipley who won the 500 Expert main on board his Maico. Don is a good rider and very competitive, but one usually doesn't see him leading Davidson and the 250 PurSang around. The 650 Novice and Junior main saw a usual winner but not when you're racing against Juniors. Bruce Rollin was the easy winner and for a guy just starting ou t, he goes real well. He finished second in the high pain t run behind Jorgensen which is also some feat since he only started here about the middle of the series. John Lopez got his first trophy, a second in the 500 Novice, and his family spread enough pride around the place for a whole slew of trophies. John is more of an enthusiast than a hero racer, but there will be no holding hi:n hack now. m .'" . M 0.
