Steve Gardner of Peoria, Illinois pushed his Walters Bros. Harley into second while Colorado rider Del Armour and Texan Ted Poovey had a showdown right up to the finish; "Dastardly Del" winning out. Ted Poovey (H-D) led off the line, but hard riding by Del Armour put him in first at the end of lap one with Gary McGoron (Yam) pulling into third and the rest of the pack buncbed as they rode past the grandstand. Poovey moved back into first for lap two and began to notice a strange phenomenon behind him by lap three: Scott Brelsford was riding on his rear tire. Brelsford pulled on by on the back straigh t to take over the lead for good for the remaining ten laps. Norton mounted Billy Field moved in to fourth close behind and for six laps gave Armour, Poovey, and Gardner fits. Field almost pulled it off on lap nine, (Please turn to pg. 30) ~1?~\ . ...
