The guys were going bananas, whooping like a bunch of wild Indians and dancing around the campfire to make it rain. Hi Vista bas been ridden to death and everybody groans and moans at the prospect of having to ride there. But both Desert Turtles and Gripsters did a great job laying out their European Scrambles courses. Everybody, but everybody, had a terrific time. Excep t Dennis. Rhea (Baj) who was running second would zap him. Mike and Jim Caudillo were running about forth and fifth, but Mike had a flat rear tire and dropped out. Jim either dropped out, too, or finished out of the results, but they sure looked good while they lasted. Jim Wotring (Hod) ran third for mosl of the race, butjttst before the finish he blew a tire and Wayne Cook (Baj) s\Yooped him. Gerald Skinner finished fifth overall for first Amateur with Craig Forney (Yam) right behind him for fifth Expert. Tom Brooks (DKW), not to be outdone by his brother, pegged it off the line and again, there was no question of the win, as long as the bike stayed together. Jeff Jeffries (Yam) chase and held down the number two spot aJithe way. Norm Modesett (DKW) ran fourth_ for a while but moved up to third when it counted. Rick Jensen (Pen) rode hard for a fourth overall in class and first Amateur honors, just ahead of James Wheater (Hus) who got fourth Expert. Larry Pfutzenreuter (Bul) slung his chain near the starting line of the 250 class EX/AM even t and the race belonged toJim Fishback (CZ).Jim was doing so well that Desert Turtles .thought he must be having a super-good time and didn't wan t to spoil his fun. They let him take a fifth loop as a victory lap and flagged everyone else in after four loops. Jim Brown (BuI) rode hard and led in for a while, making for an interesting race as he charged after Fishback and tried to hold off fellow Invader, Doug Winchell (Yam). Steve Holladay (Yam) seemed to be having a fun ride, grinning all the way up the hill, and got fourth in class to boot. Greg Seda had a fan club on that last uphill. They went crazy as he came around in fifth place as first Amateur. I think Greg was riding a Bultaco, but couldn't swear to it. (See Notes and Corrections Dept. in future issues.) Is J.N. Roherts (Hus) King of the Desert? Does he breathe real air like the rest of us? Well, A. C. Bakken (Hus) tried him on for size today, and actually managed to get ahead of him for a while, but then the King decided to quit teasing A.C. and dial it on. Even old desert hands were wowed as J.N. charged up the hill time after time, staying within inches of the line he had picked, so smooth that he didn't look like he was going fast until you saw him fly off a bump or notice that his lead increased every lap. A rock chewed on the rear brake of j.N.'s 450 Husky during practice, so he was back on the 400, on which he has earned 29 first overall wins. A. C. showed good style hanging on to second bu t he got a little tired in the arms, and desert-wise Tom Muto (Hus) , who somehow always managed to look very ;'proper," went screaming by. Once Tom got into second place he hung on with both hands and finished that way, with Tony (or A.C., if you prefer.) getting third. Fifteen-year-old Bryan Brecker (lIus) is a hard charger, having just transferred to Amateur, he came up from about 20th to finish fourth in the Open class and first Amateur. The Phantom you've been hearing about, Robert Russell, got in there again. He does indeed ride a Husky and does it quite well. Bob finished fourth Open Expert and fifth overall. This may have happened before, but not since I can remember. Cordis Brooks won both Trial Expert races today; Tom Brooks won both Div. II Lightweight Expert races: jim Fishback won both 250 Expert races and j.N. Roberts, won both Open Expert even ts. Ain't that weird? The Trail Novices got off the line with Chris Austin (Hod) in the lead. followed by Robby Zamora (Yam) and Terry Raye (Suz) and that is exactly the way they stayed righ t across the finish line. For Richie jensen (Bus), the 250 Novice portion of the Turtles' race marked his second time in the desert. Richie really got crazy and led it for two loops. Then he apparen tly remembered that he was a Beginner who really can't ride that fast and fell off. Richie finished tenth in his class which has 132 entries! A super ride for a beginner. Welcome to the desert, Richie. jim Wood's (Yam) was chasing Richie Hard, even though he had a flat front tire, right from the start. After a while, the strain of holding the front end straight got to Jim and Neal Nichols (Oss) got by to take first and Dennis Carlisle (1'1 us) zipped in to second_ Jim finished thii'd on a flat front and a rear rim that was shattered. Bill Decker (Yam) had a long lead in the Div. II Lightweight Novice go, with Lou Tyce (DKW) anrl John Dial (Puc) in second and third. Doug Clark (Suz) took the lead in the Open Novice race, and held on to it for quite a while, but he got a flat before check two on the last lap and Don Dreitz (Hus) dasbed in for' the win, followed by Bob Underwood (CZ) Doug managed to hang onto third in spite of Rick Thompson, who finished fourth. Tbe rain, with its thund.er and ligh tning was so unusual that everybody was excited about it. The cool weather put everybody in good spirits and the racers enjoyed the courses. Many people said they couldn't remember a more perfect weekend in the desert. For the Desert Turtles M.C., I have only praise. Ed Williams had the results all written up for me when I strolled by. The club got a lot of praise from the riders I talked to. '
