EDITORIAL AND OPINION CALENDAR THE CAT HI-TALK A calendar item in your latest issue caught my eye. Jumping Contest over the venerable old Grand Canal? Sanctioned by the Grand Kanal Kouth (sic) Klub? Surely you do not recognize the dangers involved. A jumper who miscalculates and lands in the proud waterway will surely chengas his body on one of the several broken television sets placed (under duress) in said canal by former CN contributor, R.Dunn, on-come afoul on the flotilla of empty Jim Beam bottles launched by one T. Bell, perpetrator of Motocross Cat (the best). Upon occasion, with blatent disregard for the area's ecology, I have also been guil ty of flinging undesirables into the canal, mostly diarrhetic puppy dogs and kitty kats. Since there is only one natural launching area on the canal, and that (unfortunately) adjoins Kooth headquarters many Koothsters have attempted to leap the canal. The latest attempt was mine, but sadly, the CZ's throttle mysteriously snapped shut about ten feet before the end of the ramp, much to the dismay of about a dozen semi-comatose onlookers. .The $I 00 en try fee sounds reaso'nable, however the Grand Kanal Kooth Klub feels that it is only fair to donate 95% of the proceeds to the K3 entertainment fund, which will be distributed among Kooth chapters in Austin and D.C., as well as the home chapter in Venice. If Byron would send me his goddam add{ess, he might get his share too. PETE SZILAGYI UDirt Bike" Magazine But firstly, charter member-K3 THE INVISIBLE FORCES I agree with J .G. Krol on the benefits of OHV registration. His article in the August 15 issue of Cycle News does a good job of explaining how the various uinvisible" government agencies affect our lives more than the much publicized elections and mass demonstrations. I would like to see more discussion in Cycle News along this line. How about a special supplement, similar to your fall 70 anti-noise campaign, that would explain this aspect of OHV registration? JACK VOLDER Thousand Oaks, Calif. CB 450 POSTSCRIPT Concerning the Honda CB450 30,000 mile test I recently sent to you: I mentioned that Honda came out with a new design for the 450 valve guide seals_ I have found that the new seals are no better than the old ones, so that complaint is still valid. It appears that the change was made to eliminate the old seal holders and thus cut costs. JOHN D. ULRICH La Mirada, California GIRELLE OWNERS UNITE I have a 1968 model Girelle Laverda threw a leg over a 74 cu. in. Henderson and went to find his fame and fortune at Daytona. L- That was back in the days before the beach course. His win there plum!!,eted Amos into '.' ----: HERE'S A RACE YOU SHOULD GOTO I wo!-'Id like for you to show our September 3 race, which is already in your calendar section, as a benefit race. One of our club members, Don Irby, broke both his legs at Indian' Dunes a few weeks ago and will be in double traction for over six weeks. It seems he locked handlebars with another rider and ran in to a tree_ 100% of the profits will go for Don's hospital bills. GREG BROWN Secretary, Starters M.C. Box 1153 Goleta, Calif. 93017 IN DEFENSE OF KROL IN DEFENSE OF KROL J .G. Krol's article "In Defense of Freedom" is one of the best expositions of the relationship between the individual and govemmen t that I have ever read. It is sane, realistic, and factual. Individuals with. the sensibility to know our real needs and with the knowledge of the ways to achieve them are rare. CHARLES II. BARRICKLA '0 IF YOU MODIFIED YOUR HUSKY FORKS. READ THIS! In the June 13th issue, page 10, an article appeared by C.B. Wood, Jr. on a modification to Husqvama fron t forks. Several things that should haye b~en stressed were" omitted' and, I'm' Simichrome and sleeps with his motorcycle which he treats as part of the family. His choice of mounts is thoroughly explored in an upcoming road test. We think he's ne.t. too.... Ed. SIDECARS I, like Dean Newton was a bit surprised by what little coverage was afforded the recent sidecar event at Laguna Seca. I also think that a more factual story than just, "Gene Romero says" would be in order. The sidecar race was one of the most enthusiastically watched races of the day according to a majority of the track officials and photographers around the course. In -answer 1:0 the charge that we were responsible for any of the debris on the course, the comment would have to be "hogwash" as what little running off of the course was done during the two days was done by a small minority who went off the outside of the comers and did not carry any significant amount back on to the track, as opposed to many solo riders going down and dragging large amounts of dirt, etc. on to the course as their bikes crossed and recrossed the track, riderless! i.e. Mr. DuHamel and others. This can be verified by your own photographers and by track officials. I have more invested in my outfit than 85% of the solo riders and traveled the distance to Monterey for more than just the chance to ride on a good course. I am sure you will recall that our race was a non-paying even t and was in the interest of building up the sport of sidecars to the level it is recognized in the rest of the world of road-racing. But, that is an almost impossible task if all we can get is the story of how X National number doesn't like us. RICHARD T. HAIGHT/ KEN HAIGHT AFM/AMA Sidecar No. 95 Sun Valley, Calif. _ concerned because two of these things could cause failure of the fork sliders to do their job and injury to the rider. If you will take a Husqvama slider and measure from the top down on the inside you will come to a shoulder where the diameter gets smaller. This shoulder is five and one·tenth from the top. Now if you wiJl check Mr. Wood's drawing you will find that the outside dimension is also 5-1/10 inches. This creates a serious weak spot and the first time you hit hard on the front wheel, the fork will break at this poin t. Tn Mr. Wood's drawing sharp shoulders are shown where the diameters change. This causes excessive stress at these poin ts and possible failure. I wasn't stupid enough to cut square comers on my own mod but the 5-1/10 dimension slipped by me and scrapped $50 worth of parts. I'm sure that others have done this same thing and maybe they caught the error and maybe they are riding around with a set of sliders that are about to break and let them unload. PHILIP H. PENN Palmdale, Calif, In retrospect we regret not having greater coverage of the sidecars at Monterey. Our brief coverage at the time was dictated by space...Ed. WHO? Remember the 125 Flattrack Main at Trojan Speedway last Thursday (Aug. 17) where the Junior in the back of the pack wen on his head in the second comer? Well, he still lives and, except for the multiple fracture of the collar bone, is as good as ever. I would really like to thank all those people who helped me on Thursday nigh t when I played crash and bum. Everybody was really outasight and it make one· realize what good people there are riding around out there. I would really like to extend my thanks to Rene Rick Bell, Bobby Estrado, Mark Revels, Jeff Burrell and all ,those people that helped load my body and equipment into my van for the trip home. A special thanks to No. 18 I who was behind me and was able to stop before he put a Pirelli across my back. So thanks again to you all, and just one question: who did the Boge Shock girl go home with? SCOTT EASTBURN Newport Beach, Calif. LETTER TO THE ED. Are you, Papa Wealey, Rod Breaker and Lefty Turner any relation? MAMA FOX Santa Ana, Calif. None at aiLEd. SOMETHING Amos Gardlin, the author of "Preignition", HDetonation", and "Everything ou always wan ted to know about Roadtesting", is the best thing that ever happened to your publication. I hope you will have more of him in the future. Gould you tell me something about him? JERRY SCHLAUDER Long Beach, Calif. Certainly. Amos w.s r.ised by a little old motorcycle meehan1c in the back hills of Sturgis J 5. Dakota until he was old enough to ride. Then, at age three and a haff,l Am"'o~ . I have no manual and would like to know if you could supply me with the name of a dealer or distributor who would work on and supply parts for this model. The bike is in min t condition with 1200 miles on the odometer. However, I am having some trouble with the clutch, which, I understand, is heavily sprung and does not engage properly.
