Trail Book Championship chase this year - the first time he has failed to qualify for a World Final since his 'comeback' to British League racing in 1969. After the meeting .Moore, twice a World Champion and still one of the craftiest track technicians in the game, announced his in ten tion to retire at the end of the season. Other failures at Coventry, along with Moore, were hiRhly fancied Australian Garry Middleton and his coun tryman, John Boulger. Both riders, from Adelaide, South "Australia, were capable of so much but big night nerves affected their performances. Middleton' turned in one of his poorest meetings of the season to finish with only four points. He seemed totally unsettled and over-awed by the occasion. BouIger was a different story and can be counted as a little unlucky not to have qualified. The other two Wembley qualifiers, brothers Nigel and Eric Boocock, are among the few world class speedway riders who have yet to visit the United States. Botli are veterans of the European and Australasian circuits and are seasoned World Final competitors. Nigel Boocock qualified for his first Final as far back as 1956 and is still going strong. During-the British meeting at Coventry he was one of the danger men, seizing the most unexpected points. His younger brother, Eric, was not expected to qualify and indeed, just scraped through after a run-off with diminutive Scotsman, Jimmy McMillan. Amongst the non-qualifiers were Terry Betts and Ray Wilson, currently rated as England's number one rider and the man most likely to bring glory to the Home Country. Wilson's demise was one of the real shocks of the meeting as he was considered one of only two riders certain to make Wembley - the other being Ivan Mauger. Betts rode solidly throughout the meeting but just missed out by one point. Cal Expo Speedway----By PatJones SACRAMENTO, CALIF .• Aug. 11, 1972 - Larry Shaw combined business with pleasure by taking time out from' his honeymoon to win the Scratch Main at Cal Expo. Shaw, who is honeymooning in Northern California with his new bride, the former Pamela Bast. edged John Cunningham for the win, Cunningham, who is just as fast as Shaw but not as smooth, led all the way up to the last turn before over-cooking it and letting Shaw by. The consensus in the pit area later, was that Cunningham might have upset Shaw if he hadn't let the Southern California rider's reputation spook him. Cunningbam simply spent too much time looking backwards for Shaw. The Handicap Main was another win for the Shaw family, but this time the h.onors went to Larry's younger brotJ;1er, Jun, who started from the scratch lme. Second plate went to - who else? Larry Shaw, running from the 60. Jim led all the way and his brother passed virtually the whole field in the last tum for his runnerup spot. Third plate wen t to veteran Stu Morley of the Red Beard Racing Team. After her interview in last week's Cycle News, Theresa Martin &ew a great deal of interest in the Division III heat. Unfortunately for Theresa, she also drew some competition in the form of Debbie J ackline who was making her fITst speedway start and still whipped Miss Martin, picking up a third place in the heat in the process. Debbie was riding the most over-geared J AP in California and practically had to push her bike around the track, but she was considerably faster than the more experienced Martin. Mis Jackline, incidentally, is so unfamiliar with Speedway that she drew a warning from burning ou t during a preliminary tour of the track. When she gets a little more familiar with the sport she's going to make a lot of male riders search for excuses. Both consolation events went to Joe Henry, who is riding harder and looking more aggressive than he has in weeks. Henry won the Handicap Consy from the 20·yard win over second place fmisher, Butch Corder, and third place man, Stu Morley. Promoter AI Lauer is drawing a lot of interest by staging a lap record competition each week, and Jim Doran is collecting a lot of interest by winning it. . Doran, who held the record at 12.5 seconds, lowered the mark to 12.4 this time, on a motorcycle that sounded like it was running on salt water. Either Doran has the only Jawa in the world with a 12·foot stroke, or his bike was missing. Either way, he collected the loot for the second straigh t week.
