Wheelsport T r i a l s - - - - - - ~ w Z W ..J U > U by Lyle Fergus LAWRENCE, KAN., Aug. 13, 1972 The temperature was close to 100, but down in the wood by the Wheelsport scrambles track, there was good shade and a lot of Trials riders to watch. A total of 65 riders came to the third Wbeelsport Trials of '72. Hot weather kept the spectators down to about 200. There was a total of ten traps with the Experts riding all of them and Novices riding eigb t. Most of the traps were alO)1g a creek bed with steep entrances, exits and turns, many of them off camber. There were large lags along the course in various places to trap the unwary. There was a sligh t injury Sunday when a Hodaka rider wen t ou t of bounds trap no. 3 and dropped off a vertical bank. The bike ended up on top ofbim. The Trials wen t very smoothly un til the trap when some of the top Expert riders didn't want to ride it. All but about four riders had ridden through three times though, so it was announced that the trap would be closed if things didn't get going. With the threat of losing 10 points for not riding no. 10, the riders hopped to and the Trials were over in short order. Wbeelsports will have a time limit on the traps at the nex t Trials to end this problem. It seems that a lot of the experts seem to wait until most of the riders nave ridden a trap before trying it. The Wheelsporrs are going to have a system where riders will ride a trap in order; then everybody will ride when the bumps and lumps are still there. Top Expert riders of the day proved to be Mike McCabe and Joe Logan. Mike losing one poin t in trap no. 3 and one point at the fearsome no. 10; Joe losing both at no. 10. Fort Hood MX - - - - -......- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - By Benny Braun FORT HOOD, TEX., Aug. 6, 1972 The Fort Hood Dirt Riders Club has done-it againl Another record-shattering motocross. The already excellen t track had been widened, lengthened and made even more treacherous. J obn Kasson, of Kasson Motorcycles in Austin and an extremely competitive motocross rider, commented "This is one of the longest and most difficult tracks I've evcr ridden ... " Joe Buenneke, of Buenneke Racing Enterprises in nearby Killeen, is a flat-tracker by profession, a type of cycle racing greatly removed from motocross. He decided it was time to try motocross, and not only ente~ed the competition, but won all three of the 201-250cc Novice races on his recently-acquired Suzuki 250 Champion. In the 125 Senior c1jlSS first was Austin's DeWitt Know on a Yamaha. Mike Kasson rode a Penton to second. In the 126-200cc Senior class John Kasson rode an immaculate Penton Jack-Piner (he sells 'em...) to victory. The 201-250cc Senior was won by Anthony Whitt of the capital city took top honors with his Suzuki followed by Ft. Hood's Wayne Booth and his CZ. In the 251-0pen Senior class Brady Booth of Temple nabbed first with his brand new Husqvarna 400. way! He got up, pushed the crowd away, and pushed his Kawasaki back to the pits, dangling engine and all. A great nigh t of rapid rounds under the lights! The teenagers did it to 'em all night. Watch out, older generation- Grand Junction Scrambles---Sprockets M X - - - - - - By Carol Witt and Jean West WICHITA, KAl S., Aug. 13, 1972 With the sun beaming down full blast 175 riders signed in by 12: 30 pm at Sprockets for a full day of exciting races, climaxed by Gary Witt's performances in each class, getting bad starts and charging on to take first in spite of the heavy wind and dust. One particular start he was so quick to catch the release of the starter band that as he shot off the line the rubber band grabbed his hand, he nipped it and it caugh t another rider, and the race was on. We had 51 riders in the 125 Jr. Class, so we had an "A" and a "B n group. Tom woods rode a Yamaha into first place in the "A" group and Allan Unruh on a Bultaco took first in the "B" group. The 125 Senior and _Sportsman Classes were run togetber, but scored separately. There was a- terrific battle between Mike LaValley on a Monarch, and Marvin Whitham on a Yamaha, but LaValley had throttle problems and had to settle for a second, with Whitham riding in for first place. by Max P. Dawson GRAND JUNCTION, COLO., Aug. 12, 1972 - You knock 'em down, run over 'ern, try to take 'em to the hospital in the ambulance, and the ambulance driver has to figbt 'em all the way to keep those young hotshoes from running back to the track to finish their race! That's the way sbe went, dear readers,at the Whitewater Hill track of the Desert Scrambles Motorcycle Club at tonigh t's short track races. Randy Beers, from Utah, riding a 360 Yamaha in the 250 Expert class fir t heat, just for funsies, used the grandstand fence for ex tra traction getting out of the west curve, and the fence reached ou t and slapped him flat down, where he promptly got run over by a following bike. His full coverage helmet probably helped out a little, as he was mostly just sbaken up, and wanted to get back in to the middle of . things - all the way to the X-Ray room he fough t 'em! We grow 'em tough out here. Gary Hunt, son of Bob Hunt, the local Kawasaki, Maico, BSA, etc ...dealer, slide into a light pole coming out of the far curve.
