LUCERNE VALLEY, CAL., Aug. 20,
1972 - So. Cal M.C. really swooped
tht" desert today with membt"rs Art
Knapp (Husky) taking his second ey<"<
first ovt"rall and Tom Smith (Yam) righ t
bt"hind him.
Tht" day dawnt"d cool but without a
bret"Zt". When tht" banner dropped, the
dust flew but wht"n it had ckart"d away,
Knapp had the It"ad at the bomb
followed by J.N. Roberts (Hus). Tit"d
for third plact" were A.C. Bakkt"n (Hus)
and Jt"rry Jones (Hus).
Right after the bomb, tht" courst"
dropped in to a sandwash and J .N . wen t
scrt"aming by. About 10 miles later,
Jerry Jones moved into second place
and two-thirds of the way around Gt"ne
'Carmady (Yam) moved into third place.
J.N. and his Husky argued violt"ntly
about which gear th<>y should be in and
who was going to stt"t"r. At the pits,J.N.
t"lectt"d to gd off whilt" the option was
still his and turned the It"ad ovt"r to
Jt"rry Jones.
Through tht" pits the first loop, it was
Jerry Jones, Cannady, Knapp, Muto
(Hus) and A.C. Bakken (Hus), all on big
bikt"s, with Larry Bergquist (Bul) and
Larry Pfutzrnrt"utt"r right behind them,
first and second 250 Expt"rts. Tht"n tht"
fog of dust closed in again and peoplt"
wt"re kept busy just trying to see tht"ir
own riders through the dust. Tht"re was
a lot of ovt>rshooting as ridt"rs peered
through the dust looking for tht"ir pits.
We did note that Mitch Mayes was
hanging in there for first Expt"rt
trailbokt" at about 17 overall.
Art Knapp was doing well on tht"
third loop when his back whet"I went
crazy. All the knobs rubbed off on ont"
side and it actt"d like it was flat./Jones
and Cannady had dropped out and
Knapp was in first place again.
Art knew that last road crossing was
thert", he had bet"n over it twice, but it
was getting pretty tirt"d out and his
concentration wasn't spot on ...and
whap. He jumped up in the air and just
slid off the back of the bikt". He ]umpt"d
up and got going again without losing
position, bu t it opened his t"yes for a
while.
Sevt"ral peopk said that last two
miles was a real killer, and for Art, it
almost lost the race. Passing so many
SUPERS:<;TA.R~M~
Novict"s crt"att"d a feeling of drt"aming
and Art was sort of coasting along when
Tom Smith passt"d him on one side and
Tom Muto roared by on the other. "I
really had to hurry to win" quipped Art
at tht" fmish line.
Art naturally was very plt"ased with
the course. "It was a dandy," he said.
"Very demanding."
Even though this was a thrt"e-Iooper,
I .couldn't get anybody to complain.
One rider said he would havt" been
happy with two loops and another
declined commt"nt, but mostly remarks
rangt"d to the good side of tht" scale.

Larry Bergquist (BuI), who has been
silent lately, showed up at the finish line
fourth overall and first 250 Expert,
followed by Mike Patrick (Yam)-. Larry
pfutzenreuter finished next at sixth
overall and second 250 Expert. Larry's
bike chewed up one of its shocks and
Larry rode quite a bit of the race
standing up.
Jim Fishback (CZ) came very close
to zapping Pfu tz at the fmish line, as
Pfutz was riding along day~aming and
decided at the last minute that he better
get with the program as Jim was back
there somewhere and would not hesitate
to pass should the opportunity present
itself.
Good old George Walker (Kaw) was
among the hoard of non-finishers today.
He creamed his brake rod again. A.C.
Bakken dropped out with a flat tire, the
most common failure of the day.
I gotta mention Robert Russell. He is
the phantom of the desert as he usually
finishes just after the last guy whose
name I take. Robert is number 61 and
may ride a Husky._but don't quote me.
Mitch Mayes (Baj) held onto his lead
in spite of some stiff competition from
Bruce Ogilvie (Baj) and Dan Johnson,
who finished shortly after him at second
and third Trail Expert. Larry Roeseler
(Baj) was doing very well, but also
succumbed to bike problems.
On down the line aways came the
fIrst Amateur, Rick Mark (Hus).
Just when we got to thinking it was a
big bike course, along came Vince
Portt"r (Puc) to take second Amateur
and first Div. II Lighwt"igh t. It could be
that Vinct" just worked very hard as the
next two bikes, ridden by Jerry Skipper
and Heath Hibbard, were 400 Huskys.
. Fifth Amateur and first 250 was Bob
