.... M w .... (.) > (.) Marty Tripes (Yam) didn't surprise hardly anybody by sweeping the 250 Expert class. Around the berm up on the pegs. CMC C a r l s b a d - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - By Buzz Baty CARLSBAD, CAL., Aug. 13, 1972 Three hundred-seventy plus riders: at least twenty riders in each of the Expert divisions, three divisions of 125 Juniors, three divisions of 250 Juniors, two divisions of 1,25 Intermediates, two divisions of 250 Intermediates. Great gods of motorcycling, it was hill-to-hill scooters. First overall in each of the Expert classes paid at least a hundred bucks! What, you may ask, would draw this many riders to Carlsbad Raceway on this particular Sunday? Today, was the start of the CMC's Hi-Performance Motocross Series, being staged in cooperation with the Hi-Performance Cycle Center of Long Beach Honda. What's first prize in this nine race series? Just one of those neat, little Honda A600 sedans. The series will run like so: Carlsbad, today's date, Sept. 10 and Oct. 8; Saddleback, Aug. 20, Sept. 17, and Oct. 15; Arroyo, Aug. 27, Sept. 24, and Oct. 22. The absolute class of motocross riders in the United States comes from Santee, California. If you don't believe me, then bring your scooter to the fray and try to beat Marty Tripes. Marty and that Yamaha were even more impressive today than last Sunday at Saddleback. He was so far out in front that the joy in watching came not from the racing but from the display of riding style and speed from Tripes. If you know Carlsbad Raceway, you kilow the distance from the finish line to the furthest point at the top of the long hill. When Marty took the checker, Rex Staten was just making the turn at the top of the hill. Rex took second overall on his CZ, Gaylon Mosier getting his Maico in for third. The best racing of the day, as far as dose racing was concerned, came in the 125 Expert class between Terry Clark on the Harley-Davidson, and Penton mounted Chuck Bower, with recently returning J iTnmy Beauchamp leading both motos, and in both losing his chain to fmish ou t of the money. Terry was involved in a four rider pileup in ·the first moto and was a distant last, as Beauchamp and Bower streaked away out in front. On the fifth lap, Beauchamp lost the chain giving Bower almost a half a lap lead over the charging Terry Clark. Clark kept passing rider after rider, and when the checker fell on Charlie Bower's Penton, the Harley mounted Clark was just three bike lengths back. The second mota saw Beauchamp jump out in front again, with Clark running a close second and Bower third. Just as in the first moto, Jim's Harley divested itself of its chain, Terry Clark won with Charlie Bower second. Terry and Charlie each had a first and a second, with Terry getting the first overall as per the best fwish last moto rule. Rich Thorwaldson and Bryar Holcomb made it one, two for Suzuki in the 500 Expert class, but it was not a sweep as CZ-mounted John Fackler really put it to the Suzuki teammates, smoking 'em in the final mota, to gamer third overall. John Derhammer (left) and Gaylon Mosier (right) have figured out how to stop Tripes (eenierl in the 250 Expert class. . .. Most Powerful '" ... MAleC .... Aug. 13, 1972 The CRC was blitzed by the old "Who's got the working water truck" trick and over 195 racers were denied a chance at their third mota because of excessively dusty conditions. The two motos that were run overflowed with riders who demonstrated their eagerness to get it on as all races were hotly contested from start to finish. If there was an early leader, he more than likely dumped it and let the next speed demand have his shot at glory only to have him dump it too. One quick CZ rider was seen making two getoffs in a row which almost aced him out of a high fwishing position. 125 Novice rider George Faber (Yam) proved he was up for the day as he ripped off first place in the first moto and then proceeded to conk out in the next moto which aced him out o£ the overall. That honor went to Allen Garrett (Yam) who played it cool. Maybe he had some secret way of knowing that there would be only two motos. He had it in the bag once Faber was out. The decision hadn't been made yet as to the "dust out" so the situation really looked mysterious. Mike Ricker got his "tinker toy" Penton cooking again and found that it still has the guts to pu t him in fran t but he is hearing noises coming from under the gas tank and thinks it's his engine. Mike Hogan kicked it as he won both motos on his Maico and took the overall. He was followed by Rick Waldron (Kaw) and Jim Rich (Suz) who both finished with 4-2 results and had to settle for a rare tie. Getting a third was Steve Aageson on a Husky. The day didn't really tum out all that bad as the trophies were handed out at the Deadman's Saloon.
