A bunched tioht 250 Junior class crowd throuah the turn at Hanford Scrambles. Don Warren (4701 broke out for a third.
HanforaScrambles-------------------By John Crawford
HANFORD, CAL., July 28, 1972 Once again the Kings County M.C., with
the willing assistance of the Hanford
M.C., produced another well prepared
and organized scrambles.
When you have the track that most
riders refer to as the best in the district,
the problem is not too few riders, but
too many!
Bill Harlman too k the lead of the 50
Novice Main right off and never looked
back as he sailed unhindered to the
checkered flag. Pat Davis had second off
the line, h'u t dropped back to third on
the last lap when Scot Lange moved
around.
Gar Salmon took immediate charge
of the 50 Junior and looked to have
things all sewed up until the last turn of
lap three when he made a close
inspection of the track surface, allowing
q,oth Ricky Pearce and 'J im Mclntyre
through. Gar was able to pick up and
get going quick enough to hang on to
third, but wasn't too happy.
The
100cc
Novice
saw Joey
ViJlanueva bring home a wire to wire
win ahead of Gino Galli who did a great
job to make up for a very poor start.'
Rick Meumann lOok full advan tage of a
last lap pileup to take third place.
Goug Garrison charged right into the
lead of the 100 Junior and looked to
have things going pretty much his way
until the first tum of the last lap when
he had a chain go astray, dropp'ing him
out of the hunt. This altered the
standings a bit and put Alex Lett into
the lead, chased by Randy Talley and
Bill Kenner, an order they held to the
checker.
Jack J ones did his usual thing in the
100 Expert by winning wire to wire
despite efforts by Kim Shropshire and
Rod Slamon.
Mike Allen, Darren Schmidlkofer and
George Thornburg turned the 125
Novice into a parade, as the order off
the line was the finishing order.
Doyle Cook moved off the line of the
125 Junior with the lead, followed by
Richard Fritz and Larry Melton. Exiting
the last tum of lap one, Melton got the
drive on Fritz to grab second, then
coming out of the first tum of lap two,
nailed down the lead by passing Cook.
On the last lap, Fritz got under Cook in
the right-hander to move into second.
Bobby Albrigh t and Curt Lange
charged into the first turn side by side
in the 125 Expert, with Eric Gifford
hanging in there for third. En tering turn
one of lap two, Gifford kept on the gas
to dive in around Lange for second,
then made a sligh t error in the
righ t-hander to allow Lange back
around.
In the last tum Mike Keith made
contact with Gifford while passing and
Eric pulled off the track. Lange
out-haired Albright entering the first
turn of lap three to take the lead. At the
checkered, Lange had the win chased by
Keith and Darrell Smith.
Brian Smart moved right into the lead
of the 200 Novice, closely followed by
Don Cox and Mark Davis. Moving
through the first turn, Davis went to the
outside to move around Cox and take
over second spot. Once that pass was
made, it seemed the race was over as the
order stayed the same to the chuker.
The 200 Junior was a ho-bum, follow
the leader affair from start to finish.
The leader of the parade was David
Pitlman, chased by John Victorino and
Tim Phillips.
Harry Champlin read starter Carl
Nelson to perfection to grab the lead
immediately in the 250 Novice-Division
No. I, chased by Jerry Johnson and Jeff
Dotzler. Jeff got a mite au t of shape
coming out of th.e right-hander and
allowed Berwyn Qualls and Mark Tracy
through.
Tracy took over third en tering the
first tum of lap two by staying on the
gas longer than Qualls and the order at
the flag was Johnson, Champlin and
Tracy.
The Second Division 250 lovice saw
James Brase charge right into the lead,
with Jerry Winn and Jay Work hot on
his heels. Steve Correia caugh t fire in
the last tum of lap one to drive under
Work and into second, then in the first
tum of lap two got under Winn to nail
down second. At the 'finish Brase got
the win ahead of Correia and Work.
ThHiS BUfl pilot looked good in this corner but couldn't work his way into the top final positions
at an ord.
