~ Bitin' the nus iDTexas rf . N :;; - ~. cD .i ~ !Ii w ..J ~ () By George Rau, Jr. SAN ANTONIO, TEX., July 31,1972Every year with the Texas weather at its worst, the Sidewinder Enduro Club of San Antonio hosts their annual enduro. This year, as in years past, the course consisted mostly of sand. Like 99% sand. As hoped for by the club, typical Texas weather prevailed making the course super dry. And in some cases, extremely dusty. With all of these good points let's not forget the many trees, heavy brush, cactus, 'barbwire fences and up to 5 ft. high grass, in which there was hidden numerous pot holes. The name of the game was' real tigh t riding and with the aforementioned obstacles one had to haul to maintain an average speed of 24 mph.. All of this and aJI~1 I.w. Central 95 degree temperature, and not one rider versed a single complain t. Except maybe the fellow that had a suspected broken hip. (Ron Schneiders, eat your heart out.) In addition to the usual trophies for the first three places, a Senior class was added. The only requirement was to be over 40 years old. The winner being Jimmy Fojtik on a Bultaco. Jimmy was also the Open class winner. Speaking of senior citizens, 57 year.old Troy Taylor waS the 250 class winner. Ken Sharp, riding a 450 Husky, was the overall winner with 29 poin ts lost. No Enduro is an Enduro without its oddities and happenings. The humorous part, for the spectators any;-vay, was the last 300 ft. before the Imish. A fairly steep grassy downhill, to a very short straight into a small ravine. The approach to the ravine accoun ted for some varied riding styles. Everything from a nosedive to a flying W. Only thing hurt was pride. The odd happening was when Scott Apple's lOOcc Honda caugh t fire and was burned to a crisp. Somehow he still managed a third in class. Most Enduro riders could eat a horse after a .good ride and today was no exception. We didn't have any horses available, but local BSA dealer kinny Pierce, beller known as ·'Mr. Motorcycle" in San Antonio, provided the ridets with a barbecue that was appreciated by all.
