..._------- "'--------------------------------~_ Dunes MX " Indian N if lL _ N .... Ol g « ~ w Z W ...J U >U olcomb leads the 500 Expert into the first turn. Winner Rich Thorwaldson isn't even in the picture yet. .By Buzz Baty ---IRV[NE, CAL., Aug. 6, 1972 - A hot, hot day that turned humid greeted the nonnal (huge) turnout for the Sunday CMC motocross. Twelve divisions produced twelve winners, which is kind of like saying one times one equals one. At any rate, with each man winning his it would normally be division, somewhat difficult to say that one man, one rider, one !;like was the total class of the day, regardless of division or displacement. Simply saying that this one rider is good, great., fantastic, unbelievable, would be like carrying coals to Newcastle, but then, Marty Tripes is that and more. Marty and his works 250 Yamaha dominated the 250 Expert division today in both of the twenty minute plus motos. He won in a manner so superior, that I feel totally free in saying that Marty's only competition will have to come from World Champion caliber motocrossers. Everybody that I talked to today had nothing but praise for Marty. Jon's father, the senior Mr. Derhammer, said, "A short while back I didn't think he could get any faster, but he did." on's comment was: "ust unbelievable!" Mark Anderson commenting on the practice session: HI tried to stay with Marty and do what he was doing and all I'managed to do was slip and slide and falloff." Gay Ion Mosier on his Maico finished second to Marty in both mo tos: "[ rode and worked my butt off and he smoked me, just really smoked me." Gaylon was up on the bubble himself today, finishing as far ahead of the rest of the field in claiming second place, as Marty did in claiming first. I understand that Marty will soon be getting used to one of the big 400 or plus Yamahas for the upcoming TranslAMA series. In talking to Marty, ·the reason for the failure of the left hand in the Eastern InterlAMA event was (are you ready for this?) his hand went to sleep. Dave Smith, the eighteen year old Maico pilot from Escondido, California, has had nothing but problems of late, and today was no exceptipn. He lost his gear box in the first 500 Expert moto. Dave, don't despair, it's always darkest before the dawn. A little bird whispered in my ear that you've been invited to participate in this coming weeks testing of the new 400 works Suzuki with Rich Thorwaldson and Bryar Holcomb. Rich ThorwaJdson won the 500 Expert class, but was pressured by Holcomb in both motos, before Bryar experienced a flat tire in tl)e first moto, and had the coil drop off his Suzuki in the second moto. Thorwaldson won on rus Boyd and S telling framed Suzuki, while Bryar was on the stock framed Suzuki. David Helleck brough this CZ in for second overall, ahead of Chuck Minert. If Charlie Bower isn't careful, the IRS is going to require that Charlie estimate his in orne and prepay his tax. Why? Ascot Wednesday night: first 125 Expert Charlie Bower, Lions Friday night: first overall, CharUe Bower, Saddleback today: fust overall, Charlie Bower, all on that screaming Mettco sponsored Penton. It sure doesn't seem to make any differnece to Charlie where he rides, he rides to win. Brush Busters Motocross _ By Dalk Bacon RUNNING SPRINGS, CAL., July 30, 1972 - The Bmsh Busters M.C. put on their first motocross here today and it was a success. The weather was warm and smog fre,e and these days that is something as 'even the desert is getting its share of the "Brown Cloud". The turnout was a little on the light side, but for a first in motocross it was a creditable showing. The motos were run smoothly and quickly without a lot of the hassles that plague an organization when they try something new. One of the most spirited rides of the day was turned in by Mike Hannon in the 500 Expert class as he rode the third moto with a broken toe but still managed to pilot his speedy Bultaco to a first overall. Second and third places went to M. Gilman (AjS) and R. Hanson (CZ). The 250 Expert class saw the order De Anza Grand By John Grout VALENCIA, CAL., July 30. 1972 John Hateley, ranked among the top ten in the 1972 AMA National points scrambles, was unable to pursue the Championship trail for today's National race in New York. Yet, he was still a winner. .. Following a quick trip from his Van Nuys home to the Indian Dunes reservation in Valencia, 22-year-old Hateley easily won two of three heats, becoming the overall victor among a potent field of 250 Expert riders during today's all-class ACE program. Weird happenings were taking place across the length and breadth of the entire Santa Clarita Valley ... In the first moto involving an overflowing 'crew of red-hot 100cc Novices, an idiot with three passengers in a highway-style dune-buggy (one of those dudes with a whippy antenna screwed to the rear bumper) somehow managed to roll onto the Shadow Glen track, joining the race already in progress, during the third lap. Wow... ! What could have been instant calamity, was averted at a final momen t when the car pilot was backed between racing machinery which was flying at something close to full-bore, and was escorted Uaw full agape) through the closest gate in the fence line. The only even t which Hateley lost, was th e first moto decision to CZ-mounted Mark Hovater, who was to gain first mnner-up spot behind the Van Nuys pro. Frank Giardina finished third overall. Rick Brown, sponsored by Nick Nicholson, again brought his big-bore Greeves to the Shadow Glen track and again went home a three-for-three Grand Slammer in the Open Expert. Closest to winner Brown were Ken Ratzloff (Mai) , Rick Marsh (Mai) and Mark Cavoretto (Bul). S till another Grand Slam was recorded by Monark rider Jeff Blix, as he whipped a good group of 125cc Seniors in three straight, five-lap motos. Bob Haroth (Yam) and Greg Blazec (Pen) finished behi",;! the winner. Victorious among the Old timers were: Tom Hoyle (Ex), Art McNamee (Am) and George Alahuzos, a three-for-three winner in the Novice division. The only Grand Slam amongst Junior contestants was collected by a high-flying Gary Doane, who was' winning his fifth straight overall on a Husky, racing for the folks at West Cycles in Newhall. Doane, who rides in the 250cc class, defeated, among others, Dave Haugh (CZ), Don Rager (CZ) and Brett Yager (Bul). Opening between Gilman and Hanson reversed as the AJS pilot managed a narrow edge over Hanson. Taking third and somewhat of a surprise in motocross was Randy Milligan (Bul). ,Milligan is currently holding a very high number in the D-37 Trailbike Expert Division. 125 Beginners K. Ryan (Hon) and B. Morrison (Bul) put together a very heavy set of motos as they continually swapped places with the outcome of each moto was in doubt right up until the end. Overall went to Ryan. If you were to disregard the results and score these two on just what y~u saw it would be almost impossible to decide who the winner would be. John Clark has just ahout had it in the 100 Novice class as he consistently waxes the opposition on his poten t little Yamaha. Perhaps he ought to move up to a bigger bike where there is some hotter competition. _ Motocross By Marla McClendon DE ANZA, CAL., July 23, 1972 - De Anza Cycle Park held their first motocross sponsored by the Bushmasters of Banning. Patti Ho (works at Malcolm Smith's shop) took first in the Powder Puff on a Husky 250. Pam Bennett took first in the Mini Powder Puff riding a Yam. One of the exciting races of the day was the mini-bike, with Frank Tarantino on a Yam. flying in to a first place. Loren Boll put it all together taking fust on a 100 Yamaha. Bob Theriault (Gar) t'lok first in the 125 class with Beldon Fields in second on a S.uzuki. In the 250 Novice race, John Loyd took first on a Yam. The race that thrilled the spectators was the 250 Expert when David Lasch (Yam) showed how it's done, taking fust. David came all the way from Yuma, Arizona to get it together Sunday. . In the Open Novice class, Mike Dosh took first on a Suzuki. The track was a European Scrambles COurse with jumps, 90 degree turns, a bumpy steep downhill shot and a rugged uphill straightaway. The riders took six laps and three different tries. De Anza has now 'put in a new MX course that is perfect for the Novice a,nd E.xper~ .. -
