Del Armour Bert Cummings got passed by Steve Gardner. leaving him to finish fifth. Public lands belong to all of us. Bill Field (Nor) scooted into the lead at the flag with the Iowa ramp jumper, Steve Droste (Yam) and Jim Rawls (Yam) close behind. Scott Brelsford charged from the middle of the pack and was slicing through riders down the 1800 foot back straight to move into fourth place going into lap two and into third by the beginning of lap three. Bert Cummings (H-D) was running in fourth a short distance behind the leaders with Steve Gardner in fifth and a race forming for sixth place between Del Armour (H-D},Jim Rawls. and Mike J hnson ITri). The field settled in to bunches by lap six with Field still in command and Droste beginning to feel the pressure from Brelsford who had moved up to within three bike lengths. Droste and Brelsford were the cen ter of attention for the next four laps dueling side by side down the back straight and through the turns with Droste's Yamaha ahead but only by a hair. On lap ten Brelsford got a good drive from turn twO and inched bv Droste on the straigh t diving in to turn three ahead for good and setting his sights on Field. who had only a short lead by this time. Field and Brelsford passed the stands side by side on lap twelve with Brelsford taking the lead out of tum two and Field suddenly finding himself the object of a charging Steve Droste. Bre.lsford stretched his lead to five bike lengths at the flag with Field and Droste dueling to the end. Harley mounted Steve Gardner and Bert Cummings waged a duel with Lynn Holloway (Tri) for fourth spot with Gardner winning ou t. Roosevelt winner Jim Rawls ran in to troubles and dropped back to eleventh after a good start moving up one more spot before the end.
