These ten counties presented resolu tions on this subject, All were opposed to wilderness extension. Some coun ties such as Tuolumne opposed specific candidate or inven toried areas in or adjacent to the county, Reasons were: (1) Loss of jobs related to timber harvesting and lumber and other wood product manufacturing, (2) Loss of tax base because of .reduction in facilities for logging and manufacturing, (3) Desired to see recreation developments, (4) Wilderness classification would not allow developments to handle more people, Chambers of Commerce - Favored multiple use management for various social and economic reasons. California State Deaprtment of Water Resources Opposed to more wilderness because of: (I) Restrictions on instrumentation for measuring water supply, (2) Elimination of reservoir sites, (3) Other treatments to increas.e water supply which are not permitted in wilderness, Environmental and Outing Organizations - In general, members of these groups support extending the wilderness study to all possible areas for the following reasons: (1) To prevent r~ad building and timber cutting,!2) To prevent off-road vehicle use, 3) To preserve the flora and fauna, 4) To offset the rapid increase in use that is causing problems in some present wilderness areas. These persons wan ted more time to study the inven toried areas, usually 30 mon ths. Ski Organizations - Members of these groups are opposed td establishing more wilderness areas containing potential for recreation use, especially those suitable for developing additional win ter sports areas. Developed-Recreation ana Vehicle-User Organizations - Generally, oppose establishing more wildernesses for these reasons: (1) Present wilderness areas are sufficient, (2) More recreational deveIopmen t is needed, (3) More roads are needed to disperse recreational use and relieve over-erowding in presen t1y developed areas, (4) A few wanted to open present wilderness to con trolled·speed roads, Private Individuals These commen ts varied widely and were often associated with one of the above categories. California had no area inventoried where there was general unifonn agreement that the area was not qualified for study. The environmental and outinj,! orJi?:anizations were in favor of most of the areas inventoried being studied, The balance of the recreation organi:!,ations were for developed recreation rather than wilderness. Over two-third of those expressing opinion said that there was enough wilderness in California and that no more was needed. These expressed the need for more areas developed for the general recreationist, harvest of timber, and use oj all other resources. They felt, in general, that the areas presently set aside in wilderness were ample or even in excess of that needed for the limited number of people using presen t1y classified areas compared to the need for areas serving all resource uses and the great majority of those using the N ati on aT Forests for other types of recreation, "' -:; g' .0.. ~ " D ... :> « ~ w Z ~ ~ (.)
