SACRAMENTO,CAL.,July 28,1972Auburn's next·to·oldest Speedway racer
cUd his thing to nile and won the Scratch
Main event. Gus beat out Stu Morley,
the little giant that flies around the
track like a mad man.
tu tried everything he could to catch
up, but time ran out and the flag
dropped with Gus in the lead. Third
place went to Rich M<;Murry and
another Reno ace, John Cunningham,
fourth.
The Reno troops cUd their thing
tonigh t by taking many of the even ts
through au t the evening. The biggest
gang of them got into the Handicap
Main event and it was a one-twa-three
finish for Check Pain t Cycle owner Ron
mally and his teammate, Barclay
Trehal. Along came john Cunningham,
third.
The Match race was a well balanced
event with two locals trying to out do
each other. The race was between Milan
Vickers of Vickers' Honda and Norman
Denny of Denny's Honda.
The first lap found these two young
riders making passes at each turn but
into the final lap Norman stepped into·
the lead and went on to win overall.
The Div III Heat race was run
Cal Expo Speedway - - - - By Bruce C. Young
SACRAMENTO, CAL.,July 21,1972Tonight was one when many a rider
wished they had stayed home. In the
first teh races almost the en tire field in
each event reU down. It seemed like it
was not the rider that was fastest that
won, but the rider that kept his cool
and rode around all the downers.
Stu Morley and John Fishburn did
their thing tonight and along with Jim
Doren these three took away their share
of the loot. Stu won the Scratch Main
with Fishburn righ t on the little
bugger's tail.
John Fishburn won many of the early
races that he ran but was unable to take
any of the Mains.
Jim Doren took the Handicap
Consolation with ease with Pat Rooney
second. One of our local riders, Rich
McMurry, made himself felt tonight
winning the Scratch Consolation and
several of his earlier races also.
Theresa Martin carne back tonigh t
and almost won the Div III heat race
when everyone else in the race fell down
during the running. But at the end
Theresa was only able to gather third
overall in this ride. Keep trying,
Theresa, you will have your day.
Richard Hardmeyer, one or the oldest
racers in Northern Calif. Speedway
racing, was able to take the Handicap
Main event.
Rich took the outside road and just
kept it on the groove all the way,
beating out Rich McMurry and Norman
Denny w.ho led earlier in the race. Rich
took the flag first much to the surprise
of the other riders and spectators.
