The German language has a word for
it: GelandespoTt, Which means
competitive motorcycling over nature's
turf. Speaking th~t language with an
Austrian accent, the new 175cc Puch is
a slim, wiry Tyrolean with a muscle of
an engine in a lithe, bolted frame.
The huge, bla.ck fins fanning the
cylinder first grab your eyes. There's
more heat exhange area here than most
400cc jobbers need, but that's to keep
its coolon the hottest desert hill, or
half-plugged with Michigan mud.

Everything angles upward, out of the
way of obstacles that tend to catch at
levers, brake arms, exhaust pipes_ The
expansion chamber swells very sligh t1y,
like a snake that has just swallowed a
salamander, then terminates in a Yz ..
stinger, indicating that it is tuned for
high RPM.
Overall. the Puch 175 looks like a
great gawdamightymotocross contender
(which it is). It is also a very fine
cross-country machine. But in MX and

Believe it or not, that's where the kill button
hides. Pushing it makes you feel like a trained
pigeon. Thankfully, there's a compression
release.

Hare Scrambles, it is generally classed
with the 250cc bikes. Wherc a 175
motor really comes into its own is in the
growingly popular enduro.
In a tough enduro, where being able
to carry your machine often counts as
much as its ability to carry you, a 175 is
an ideal compromise. It can weigh very
little, yet crank enough power to leap
tall boulders with a 200 lb. lardass
aboard. If you are too big for a I25cc,
yet physically out of condition for the
250cc scooters, then probably the 175
class is just righ l.
Let's see if the 1972 Puch is the
one-seven-five for you.
After leaving the fuel taps on all
niKht owing to an inability to translate
German (auf means on, I think), it
nevertheless pops to life on the first
poke. We are impressed by the 27mm
Bing carburetor, for most others would
have flooded the crankcase, calling for a
nasty session of purging. The Puch also
comes equipped with a compression
release.
