RUNNING AGAINST THE ROCK III f ... N .... '" rr; C. ::> « ~ w Z W ..J U > U Eugene M o t o c r o s s - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - By Janis Randall Photo by Paul K. Petersen EUGENE, ORE., July 16, 1972 One-hundred twenty riders signed in for motocross at this new facility. Temperarures soared to 100 degrees, awfully hot for Oregonians, but word is getting around that this is a terrific motocross track. The irrigation pipes were not functioning at this race and a water truck was used. It didn't work, and the track was dusty. Manager J obo Milich assures us that the July 30 race will see fully operative watering systems. Ken Burley has dominated Eugene Motocross, but today saw flawless Butch Waymeyer outride (or outlast) Burley's Penton to score a first 125 Expert win. Rick Burgett and his CZ's dominated 250 and Open Expert racing by a large margin. Early threat Ron fujii went up in smoke and Bend, Oregon flash Randy Limbeck picked up second 250 Expert, but was never in contention for first. _~~~~~~"l : • : OF FR'EMONT 37318 FREMONT BOULEVARD FREMONT. Racing at this track is a thrill as the track is demanding, yet close to the city of Eugene, and has excellent spectator viewing. By Janis Randall JUNCTION CITY, ORE.,July 15, 1972 - Even though many people Went to the National at Castle Rock over the weekend. there stin was a good turnout of riders and spectators. and a cool evening of racing. I'm sure I don't have to tell you who won the lOO A Main. Yes, you're right, Diane Cox (Suz) did. he jumped out into the lead and kept a steady pace even though Todd Moir (Kaw) was pressuring her from behind, and Tom Moore (Kaw) received third. It would be interesting to see her compete with some o.cal gals! Peter Simonson took his Yamaha to a fast first place win in the 125 A Main with Curtis Dom (BuI) who has been faring quite well in this class, taking . second. The 200 A Main seems to change winners quite often. This race was won by Gary McDowell (Bul) with ,,"st race winner Delbert. Spinney (Bul) receiving second. Tony Nova (Bul) took third for his first trophy this racing season and making it another one of those Bultaco sweeps. The 250 Expert Main event is always a crowd pleaser and tonigh t's was no exception. On the first start. Charles Andrews laid his extremely potent Honda XL250 down to avoid several other slower riders in the first tum. He is fast becoming a con troversial rider amongst fans, officials, and some riders, but one thing is clear: he can motate. The second start found Lee Stumpenhaus jumping to the lead on a Bultaco followed by Andrews, Craig . Randall (Oss) and Curtis Dom (BuI). S tumpenhaus and Dorn both ride for freds in Corvallis, and Andrews and Randall ride for Honda of Eugene, so this race was beginning to take on team race tactics. After a couple of laps, Randall slid out down the front straigh t and was immediately run over by Dom who barely kept control of his moun,t. Randall appeared seriously hurt and was sprawled with his Ossa on the front straigh t causing the race to be halted. After being removed in the ambulance he was found to be alrigh t. The race was restarted a third time in staggered start, Srumpenhaus. Andrews, Dom, and Richard Schoonover. The final results after a terrific duel were S"tumpenhaus, Dorn, Andrews, and Schoonover. The Open Expert Main was a runaway for Richard Schoonover and his sana Ducati. Not super horsepower, bu t superb riding put him in fron t of Reed Moser, Ron franks. both Yamaha mounted. Santa Rosa Pro Short Track - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - By Bill Spencer SANTA ROSA, CAL., July 26, 1972 With TUmors rampant about illegal motorcycles and blown-up motors and many crashes going on all around, Novice Steve Pestoni persevered through it all to a clean sweep in the secpnd ovice-Junior Short Track at the Chris Beck Arena in just over a week. The Sacramen to rookie did it in fine style with a three second advantage at the checkered, and he bettered John Gennai's last week's win time by better than one second. Gennai failed to transfer from an earlier qualifying heat when he crashed attempting to pass Randy Miller. as Miller got sideways exiting the first tum. Gennai crashed into him and in the ensuing fall was nearly carried into the next tum by the following pack. He was unhurt, hut finished for the night. Pes toni's only competition came from last year's winner, Pat McCaul, riding AI Kenyon's Bultaco. An old one at that. At the recent Laguna Seca National many AMA staff personnel were discussing the fact that the new '71-'72, Bultacos had not had their engines, specifically the five port versions. approved by the AMA. Since this was not done, the motors were supposed to be illegal and therefore unable to run for this event. But as of this evening, referee Walt Masterson had not received any official word and so all went as it was the week before and Bultaco came out ahead. Th usly, the moto'r McCaul was riding was legal no matter what. McCaul had a clean sweep going for him also, but the Main told the tale and at the close, Jim Crenshaw and he were locked in fierce combat. On the white flag lap. Crenshaw tried a pass on the outside and almost had it but McCaul nearly gave him the high side and the Salem National Junior winner backed off and stayed clear as they crossed the fmish line, second and third. In the lO-lap Consolation, Pat Hennen won easily on a Mt. View Auto Stereo/Kenyon Bultaco but the surprise of the night came in second. COLISEUM CyetE .
