Why not go to the authority on this subject, Husqvarna Motor Corp.? Their brochure plainly says UHuskys." You will also note that they have copywrited this term. As you may know, this IS a common practice, misspelling a common word to make it a proprietary registerable trademark. PAT McEVOY TWO-DOGGIES RIDER POLL Though I do not personally own a Husqvarna I had several students in my English class last year that did. The problem you described in your july 25th issue, i.e., is it Huskies or Huskys, was one that troubled them whenever they would mention their bikes in essays or whatever. With the cool, swift logic that accompanies English teachers who own Kawasakis, I was able to point out to them the grammar rule. that st",tes "y" is changed to Hies" on a word such as Husky because the letter before the "y" is a consonnat. If a vowel appears then the H y " remains and an Us" is added, e.g., Ukey" changes into "keys," but "Husky" changes into "'"Huskies." How about that? Another interesting thing about the word Husqvarna is that it is the only word that I know of that has a "v" following the "q." Way back when the "v" and the u u " were easily confused and I supposed a few sloppy transcribers messed up the "v" so it came out looking like a "u." Today one can see examples of this in government buildings where the older form of "u" is used on the facades in the lettering where "v" is very popular. You sure have a fine staff of proof-readers down there. Hardly anything incorrect gets through which is more than can be said of the bikes I've seen in some races lately. Maintain and all that. My friend recently touched the head on my Yamaba' after I had ridden it for two hours. (Ouch!) He does bone-headed things sometimes. My ambition is, has always been to be a motorcycle racer. By the way, besides being a racer, when I'm old enough 1 want to join the Cycle News staff. How do I go abou t this? My friend says that you guys wouldn't print my letter in Cycle News. IF IT HAD TO HAPPEN _ HUS-KORN-VARNA 1 feel it is my duty to straighten out your obviously tortured, demented, badgered, and otherwise burdened minds. One Husky is a Husky. Two of them gives you a couple of Huskies. Any more and you call animal population control. By the way, an Italian on a Husky is a Huskini, a Spaniard on a Husky is a Huskana, a Frenchman on a Husky is a Huskevou, a German on a Husky is a traitor, and anyone east of the Mississippi on a Husky is a Husk. THE TROPHY RACER 1 am sitting here in great disbelief looking at the Trophy that I received at Indian Dunes. I don't understand it. They nail you with a S15 entry fee and when you fmally get your trophy (about six weeks later) I fmd that for all my time and money and beating my bod to death to get a third after a third row start, I get a tin cup with a plastic.bottom. Where do all the entries go? Us Novices deserve something for our time and money. FRANK HOUGH How about the pleasure of racing? How much do you suppose it costs Walt James to maintain the place? .. Ed. TIRED (YAWN) I'm ti~d of these "Family Enduros" and their high en try fees. My husband, son, daughter, and myself all ride these, and we can't afford many $40 events. . CARRIE WATSON Inglewood, Calif. , I' READ ABOUT IT IN THE FED. REGISTER Thank'You for your comments on the Department's draft environmental statement pertaining to the use of off-road vehicles on the public lands. These commen Is will be given consideration in the preparation of the final environmental statement on off-road vehicles. It is the policy of the Departmen t to make use of the Federal Register to give· notice of its proposed rule making, and to invite the public to participate in these matters. At this time, we would like to alert you that the notice of availability of the final environmental statement on off-road vehicles will be published in the ,Federal Register. In addition, the proposed regulations for the use of off-road vehicles on lands administered by bureaus of the Department are undergoing ~view, and also will be made available to the public in the Federal Register. Hopefully, we will publish the notice of availability of the final environmental statement and the proposed regulations on off-road vehicles in the Federal Register duting the early part of August. You will be. inte~sted in knowing rill My son was participating in his second event of the day at Saddleback when his foot found somebody's fender wrapped around it. He broke a collar bone. Efficiency prevailed. Flagmen were at his side. The remaining bikes were waved aside and ambulance attendants had him delivered to the first aid station in a matter of minutes. In about 15 minutes another ambulance arrived and delivered him to Chapman General Hospital. A spectator took care of his bike. When I returned for my van, officials and spectators inquired about his condition with genuine concern. It was a smooth and well conducted operation and my son and I wish to thank all individuals responsible for it being so. MAX L. LOFLAND IS IT RACING? As a speedway fan of several years, I headed for Costa Mesa and the speedway races Friday night to witness my first team race. Instead of an enjoyable evening of racing, I found the Costa Mesa track and riders resemble a roller derby. Even Larry Huffman is beginning to sound like Dick Lane. All we need now is a rider's lament after the racing is over with "Big Mike Konle" chasing Harry Oxley around the infield with a pair of bent speedway bars. Motorcycle racing, to me, has always meant sportsmanship with the best rider taking the glory and the cash. Speedway racing is about as exciting a motor sport as there is, without purposely trying to put another rider through the wall. Even though the whole program was not team racing, when you get used to intentionally banging your fellow riders around for the first 12 races, it's natural to keep on riding the same way during the rest of the program. Last night there were more restarts than I've ever seen in one evening of 24 events, not to mention'how many riders had to be helped off the track. This type of racing is going to get some one seriously injured, and when it happens it's not going to be an accident because Team Racing depends on blocking and bumping_ 'If a rider goes down it's more than likely that he's been put down on purpose. 'Ed Williams, last year's speedway Rookie of the Year, went to the hospital with a reported broken collarbone during a "Team Race". If the promoters are so money-hungry that the lives and well-being of the racers can be put in jeopardy for a few more dolla!s, then speedway needs some lOstant promotional help. RCiHO FMAN . "
