l N .... Ol r15 HATELEYBlPS ASCOT FOES GARDENA, CAL., July 28, 1972 - go John Hateley returned to the Ascot Half U mile and made it a first time success. It was reported that John has dropped off the National circuit and will devote full time to racing at Ascot for the rest of the season. Hateley first took the measure of Ron Moore and DeWayne Keenter in the heat race before he was 'stopped in the Trophy Dash. The Dash had Hateley, Mike Haney, Tom Rockwood and Keeter and .it was Haney in a mild upset. Mike has been the most improved Expert rider on the West Coast this year. Lloyd Houchins got his. Triumph out in front on the first lap of the final but gave way to Hateley on lap two. John could not break away for a runaway win and Houchins, Moore and Rockwood chased all the way to the flag. Haney could no,t find his heat race and dash pace, taking a fifth place finish. Tom Rockwood also returned to his home track for'the first time in many weeks and was plagued from the first lap of practice with the same problems that have knocked him out of contention on the circuit - engine troubles. Tom Horton and Larry Gino resumed their weekly duel for top Junior honors with Horton holding the lead in the final for the first two laps before Gino sailed by to take the lead and the eventual win. Denny Kanegae, the rider that beat both the week before, never got it all together this time and had to come from behind to get third, never a challenger to the top two Juniors in the west. John Gennai racked up another Novice Main win but was pressured all the way by Mike Renslow and the fast improving Walt Foster. Gennai was defeated in the Handicap Novice Dash by Renslow in a cIose one. The AMA Pros now have three in a row coming up this weekend. The Half·mile at Ascot will run Friday nigh t; then the TT riders. move into Ascot on Saturday nigh t for the third time this year. On Sunday night it will be a first time AMA professional event, a TT at the San Diego track, located east of town. The track has been running Amateur even ts the past two years and it will be the first time for the professionals and the first time for an AMA money event since the late 1950's. It. was also announced at Ascot Friday night that long time Pro and many time TT ace, Eddie Mulder, has retired from racing. Eddie stated that all his equipment is for sale and he is giving up racing due to the high cost. He will now be a fult·time stunt rider in movies and television. Lloyd Houchins got It together for second. .' John Hateley lays It over on the way to his win. Trojan TT and F T - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - . , ; . - - . , ; . - - - - - - - - - - - By Art Loya SOUTH GATE, CAL., July 20, 1972 You can mark down Paul Coberly as the comeback rider of the year at Trojan Speedway. Although talk is as cheap 'as vegetables, Coberly, 24, displayed all the riding skill to, back up this claim Thursday night as the Torrance ace swept to a dazzling victory over last week's winner, Bob Byars, in the 250 TT Main event, won the 250 TT Trophy Dash, and rmished a close second in four other events of six events entered. Coberly's overall record for the night gained the respect - of many a rider. Especially after his absence of four mQnths since bis last appearance, and since returning from a three year hitch with UncIe Sam's forces. Ranked as the number one Junior earlier this season, Coberly, mounted on . his new Proto-cision Machining sponsored Bultaco, earned his new rank as a Senior rider for the balance of the season by ou t-performing Goade for five exciting laps before winning the 250 Main event over Byars, Brian Garcia (Yam), Danny Garcia (Ossa), and David Reinhardt (Oss) who finished ahead of Miller (Oss). An obvious highlight of the TT and flat-track action was the hot duels of Coberly, and Goade, as they attempted to gain the atten tion of Miss Cindi Clemens the "Boge Girl" who was on hand with the Boge BunLh from Moto Imports to presen t some trophies and , Boge shocks to the feature winners. And anyone who casted an eye on Miss Clements just couldn't blame Coberly, and Goade for the terrific show. The 250 FT Main was won by Goade over Coberly. (Who else?) Again it was Byars doing the chasing to finish third in almost the identical finish as the TT Main with Brian Garcia fourth over brother, Danny Garcia. After the first , lap, it easily appeared to those of racing authority, that the field was outclassed as Goade man-hapdled his Bultaco in the turnS-to stay in front all the way to the checkered. Earlier in the program, Goade won the 250 FT Trophy Dash over Coberly, D. Garcia, and Dan Chilton (Bul). There were also some riders who experienced some very unsuccessful left the rest of the field in the dust. Guthrie held off the rest of the pack to take third place. Sal then returned in the 250 professional Half.mile, and once again took an early lead. At this point, Peluso looked like he was going to blow Ascot's top Novices: Hockie, Danell, arid Sanders, in the weeds. But Danell, after having a poor start, moved into the second position with Hockie right behind. Hockie passed Danell on the sixth lap of the 10-lap feature, and tried to catch Peluso.' Sal, however, had the groove at South Bay just right and Hackie's attempt was for naught. Danell took the number three spot. • For his third feature win of the' evening, Peluso made Itis victory in the 125 Sporting .!tider Tf look !lui~ easy. ,- as he grabbed the top spot in turn one and was long gone. Brad Holt rode his Yamaha to· a second place finish with Earl Roloff taking the third spot. Ron Moore, making his first showing at South Bay in over two years, showed San Diego County why he is one of the top riders at Ascot, capturing the Open class Half-mile on his Triumph. Moore did not have a good -start, but made a beautiful ride through the pack and took the checkered flag going away. Ward Ring took his Triumph to the second spot, as Dan White grabbed'third on a Yamaha. ~n the Open class Steeplechase Main, Ring got a super start at the line and was way ahead going into the first turn. Ring ran to an easy victory over the rest of the field. White captured the second posjtiQII with M'QQre ta«ing thitd place. South Bay S p e e d w a y - - - - - - - - - - - - - By Tom Bhittler CHULA VISTA, CAL., July 23,1972 San Diego's Sal Peluso became the first rider at Sou th Bay Speedway this season to win three Mains as he rode Don Vesco Yamaha's to victory in the 125 Sporting Rider TT, 250 Professional TT, and the 250 Professional Half·mile. Peluso is listed as a Junior in AMA this year, but Sal is unable to compete at Ascot Park because of the fact that he cannot rmd an Open bike to ride. Peluso could en ter only three even ts in the California Motor Racing Enterprises program, and Sal was the victor in each feature. Peluso grabbed a quick lead in the 250 TT, but Danny Hockie was' not about to make it easy for Sal. Peluso and Hockie put on one of the rmest battles of the year at South Bay, as they _ performances that rated "hard luck" awards of some kind. First off, there was Dan Corbett, the year's point leader who blew a primary chain on his mount early in the program. Before the nigh t was over, Corbett had competed on nine different mounts including Coberly's and Goade's, encountering mechanical breakdowns on some and winning on others. Corbett's biggest win came in the 250 FT semi-main that saw him trailing Clyde Dennen (Kaw) for four laps before taking the lead as they headed for the white flag. And there was Mark Revels (Car) who had factory representatives for the second straight week to see his performances on the noted "bullring". Leading the 125 TT Main the first four laps, Revels fell victim to a frozen' engine two laps from the checkered. Once again, leading the first lap of the 125 FT Main, Revels fell by the wayside with an engine that refused to finish a Main despite a win in an eartier heat event. -r- Two chilling chain·reaction spills preceded the 100 TT Main event that involved three riders spilling in each accident, but, despite the awsome spectacle, everyone escaped with relatively minor bu'mps and scratches. Allen Swett (Hon) making out like a Dave Aldana, won the TT 100 Main over Dean .Meyer (Hon). and then came back to win the 125 TT Main on a Suzuki. Robert Crecelius (Yam) outlasted Miller, and Byars in the 125 FT Main in a race that in all probability was the tamest of the program as far as wheel banging and spills were concerned.
