rM Petaluma Scramble:ess------------------....- ~ l>. By James Brammer PETALUMA, CAL., July 15, 1972 From second spot, Dave Dotson won the 250 Expert heat and final at Petaluma. In a hot race with Phil Carando, Dotson won the second Expert qualifying heat by passing Carando. On the third lap of the Main he grabbed the lead, this" time from Steve Powell. Meanwhile, Larry Drew and Kent Johnson were contesting third spot with Drew taking it from Johnson on the north comer in the same lap when Dotson took the lead. Drew had won the fU'st heat with Jim Coats chasing. In the Open Expert class, Allen Yarrow, who never seems to fall while in a good close scrap, slid down while way out front. Jim Saitone and Bill Calicura were battling for second spot. With first spot at stake, Calicura took the lead from Saitone. In the 250 Junior class, John Davis easily won his heat on a 250 Honda single. He was again hot in the final moving up from fifth to second in two laps, bu t flags waving indicated something was wrong. In the restart, still highly charged, Davis ran off the track and unsympathetic leaders would not let him back into the winner's circle. Bill Hom picked up a 125 Novice win and Kevin Sinclair another 125 Junior fjnal on his 100 Hodaka. It was a close one for Sinclair on the last lap with John Guglielmetti coming up from third attempting to pass for the win on the last lap. Doug Roark passed Willy Morgan (Bill Morgan, Jr.) for second spot in the 500 Novice final with John Travis taking another win. Sherman Wong came from the very back to finish second in the 250 Novice final, won by Dave Neuusen. Stacking up in the corner in the 500 Expert class at Chowchilla. Rick Reed IGWl managed third on a Honda. Chowchilla Scrambles------~--..:..--------- By Sportphoto CHOWCHILLA, CAL.,July 21,1972With. the able assistance of Harvey Bakker, the Broadsliders MIC prepared about the best track surface ever seen in Chowchilla. In times gone by, the track has had a tendancy to loosen up and get very rough, usually developing a series of whoop-de-doos entering the first tum, which needless to say caused the riders some problems. All of this was no real fault of the club, as all the membership put in many long hard hours working on the track attempting to find the right combination. The surface was always less than ideal, until tonight. Vern Salyers needed only until the' righ t-hander to take charge of the 50cc Novice-Junior and once in the lead, proceeded to run away with the Main. Todd Parker was holding down a solid second (and first Novice) until he got on to the brakes too hard, killed the engine and was too ligh t to bump-start his machine. This put miniscule Donald Howard in to second, which he held to the checkered ahead of Greg Powell and. Ricky Talley. The 100cc Novice was almost a parade, with the order in the first tum being the order at the finish. The only thing to relieve boredom in th is even t was the battle between Jim Tumey and Sam Mathews. Jim and Sam charged into the first tum side by side, but Tumey got back onto the gas just a hair quicker exiting the first tum and moved into the lead. Bill Johnson op ted for the outside position on the line of the 100 Junior-Expert Main, only to have James Crawford use his pole position to full advantage to dive into the first tum under Johnson and into the lead. The 125 Novice Main was District 36 all the way as Billy Cupit and John Ostlund swept to a one, two victory ahead of Dale Hansen in third. Scott Galloway looked to be set to walk away with the 125 Junior-Expert as he jumped righ t in to the lead off the line and just had to be feeling groovy, showing the Experts the fast way home. Coming out of the last tum, moving to the checkered, Scott encountered a fallen rider and a flagman dragging the machine right in front of him! He was forced to almost stop to avoid colliding with the flagman. This allowed David Nelson and Jim McCracken through to put the two Experts up fron t at the finish. Scott was still first Junior and thus didn't get cheated out of a trophy by the flagman's foolishness. Jerry Moulthrop charged right into the lead of the 175 Novice and seemed to have the race in his pocket until the very last lap, when Jerry lost it. This allowed Paul Boothe through for the win, followed by Ken Thiebaud and Richard Eldred. The 200 Novice was a brotherly event as the brothers Cox; Donnie and Kipp, picked up the first two positions, followed by Ron Jorge. Don Roberts and Tim Phillips drove in to the first tum of the 200 Junior side by side and Roberts got the power to the track just a bit better and moved into the lead from the outside. At the checker, Roberts just had the edge over Phillips, who was chased by S tan Champlin. Lodi S c r a m b l e s - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - By Bill Spencer LOD!, CAL., July 21, 1972 - Capping off an in teresting state of affairs was a series of protests in the 250 and 500 Expert Mains that kept the always thrilling Lodi Cycle Bowl tense. The reverse programs may have led the way for the word flaying that was to follow as the 500 Expert Main ran with Jerry Kale taking the checkered fU'st but without the benefit of his entire exhaust pipe, which he lost on the second lap. In the ensuing battle a couple of the riders said that they had to slow to avoid the object on the track and another said that the rule requires a muffler and a finish with the equipment that you start with. It made for some interesting conversation but never actually a legal protest and so Kale got his trophy and points while Dale Mathers got second and Mike VanLienden third but I doubt if we have heard the last of that. Dale Mathers was just getting started, as the last event of the night was the 250 Expert and the action had yet to begin. Seven trophies lined the finish area and most of the riders involved with the top twen ty point system were on hand to see about gelling the first spot an'd the seven points. On the first start, (Right, there was more than one,) Del Smith had his hand in the air and Dana Perri's lead was brought back to the line. After many attempts to start and much trouble with pu tting old man Huff in the back row, the flag fmally flew but without ole Raymond. It seems that the 41 year-old f.ast kid was having conversations with pit extras and linemen when the flag went up and so Ray sort of motored on by the starter as if to accept this as the race. But Dale Mathers thought otherwise and he ran out with fury in his eyes and got hold of the red flag. As Dana Perri came by in the lead, once again, Mathers waved the red and Dana and two other riders pulled out of the action. It seems as though that wasn't to end it though as Rick Hocking and Alex Jorgensen were still hot at it and they went the distance with Jorgensen once again winning on the Champion Kawasaki. Once the checkered was thrown, the action really got hot as fathers and mothers and uncles and aunts got into tile fracas. Like I say, never a dull moment at Lodi. The outcome will be decided by the ever competen t Competition Commillee but whatever the outcome may be, Dale Mathers will most likely nOt have a card for some time. As for the rest of the nigh t's action, all went quite smoothly but the fact that the races were over before midnight was overshadowed by the verbal actions. Meanwhile, at ,he Vallejo Scrambles, Mike Faria ยท(538) was winning the 100 Junior class and John Prince 1355Jl was thinking he probably wouldn't get his picture in CNW.
